Workplace diversity encompasses creating an environment in a workstation that encourages inclusivity. It is ensuring that each person’s differences are accepted, strengths are embraced, and all the employees are given the opportunities to exploit the limits of their potential. It involves taking advantage of these differences and making good use of it to aggrandize the growth of the institution.
Workplace diversity increases the variety of viewpoints in a company in that the diverse talents will look at an issue from a different angle, therefore, giving the company a broad range of choices. It will also expand the firm’s adaptability since the company will have experience from diverse groups. Another benefit of workplace diversity is the expansion of the service range where the diverse group in the firm will provide various talents.
Workplace diversity comes with communication challenges since some of the employees may not understand the language that the managementuses. Some of the staff may also not agree with another section of the company and, hence, will resist changes in the firm. Another challenge will be incorporating diversity in a company’s policies, which could prove to be a tough task if there is a wide range of groups in the institution.
Reorganization has greatly impacted on human resource management which has, in turn, led to outsourcing and downsizing of companies. This results in the company having fewer employees who then do more work than before.
Managers must understand what discrimination is and the consequences. They must also learn their cultural prejudices and biases. They should be open to changing the organization when deemed necessary.
