Week 6 Discussion

Wilmington Delaware has over the last few times dominated the headlines for all the wrong reasons. The town has been nicknamed as the murder town in the united states due to the high rates of crime that have experienced there. According to Perez, (2014), the cases of reported homicides were 27 a tie record from what was recorded back in 2010. This was indeed a representation of a community that was deeply in crisis with itself, and the client environment was very hostile. Wilmington is just a small town with a small population of 71,000 people, and these rates of crime are worrying for such a small group.

The implications that these reports have had on the community as a whole have been on the divisive side depending on who you ask. Most of the residents who have been victims of the crimes term the city as hostile and always lay a pointing finger to the city officials and police for their reluctance(Juliet et al., 2017). Others argue that the city is very safe and these happenings are taking place in every town and not Wilmington alone. However, people from other areas now fear to come to the town due to fear, and this is a huge loss to the economic development of the town.

Different human services implications can be related to this topic. So of the reasons as to why the crime rate in this town is that high include poverty, racism, early pregnancy, school dropouts among others. The human services providers have failed especially those in school to educate the youths on the dangers of entering into crime. Most of the criminals who have been shot by the police are mostly between the ages of 15-21 years which is worrying(Jones, 2014). The government should become stiff on the issue of gun control to prevent the weapons from ending in the wrong hands.
