Domestic violence is one of the severe cases that go on all over the world. Every day there has to be a man or woman who is being harassed by his/ her partner in various ways. These may include wife/ husband battering, rape and in worst case scenarios even homicide. It may even get more serious when one partner commits suicide as a result of the slipping into a depression mode due to frustrations. In my opinion, the killing of a wife batterer may be justified to some extent.

The reason why such a case of murder can be justified is that often, the wife batterer is either drunk or having anger management issues. They, therefore, opt to unleash their frustrations on their wives. Because their judgment is clouded either by intoxication or anger, they become aggressive and pose severe threats to the victims including death. In such cases, the victims, due to the natural human reaction will feel the need to defend themselves. In some situations, this self-defense may turn out to killing the offender sometimes intentionally or unintentionally. Such incidences can be justified because there was an immediate threat to a victim’s life. It may be a case of either killing or get killed.

For example, in an interview titled ‘Barbara Sheehan house of horrors,’ the victim Barbara Sheehan recounts how for many years her husband would beat her. There are times when she would sustain injuries that got her hospitalized (NYPD,2011).  It was during one such incident that her husband beat her up so bad and was threatening to kill her. Barbara had no choice but to take a gun and shoot him before he could kill her first.

In the case above, the wife batterer posses a significant threat to the victim? The fact that the wife killed him justifies self-defense. The case is not different in many other examples of domestic violence. Therefore, courts should treat these cases as acts of defense.
