Topic 1: What role does health education play in effective environmental health programs? Choose a campaign or program from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Environmental Health section to illustrate the main points of your response.
The environment includes the water we drink, food we eat and the air we breathe (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.). Besides, it also includes the microbes, radiation, physical forces, and chemicals we encounter. The interaction of the population with the environment is not always healthy, and that is why health education plays a critical role in creating awareness of environmental hazards and improving the health and wellness of the people. The Environmental Hazards and Health Effects program aims to protect people from environmentally-related illness and deaths through research, surveillance, and activities (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d.). The goal of this program is to improve people’s understanding of the connection between the environment and health through research.
Health education helps in building the knowledge, skills, and attitude of people about health. Besides, with skills, people can learn to make healthy choices throughout their lifetime (Edelman, Mandle & Kudzma, 2014). The Environmental Hazards and Health Effects program reach out to people in different settings thus helping in increasing the dissemination of health information and education. Additionally, the programs encourage and enhance health and wellness of the population by educating them on issues such as air pollution, asthma, behavioral health, chronic diseases and substance abuse. Through the health education, people get the motivation to improve and maintain their health by reducing risky environmental behaviors (Edelman, Mandle & Kudzma, 2014). The program offers health education so that people can strengthen their ability to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters and adapt to the dynamic environmental conditions.
