The conflict theory maintains thata capitalist economic system unfairly privileges the rich, who possess the ability tomanipulate and put in place unfair social and economic systems that functions to their benefit. The populaces who are at the bottom of the social stratification possess limitedprospects that would allow thembetter their economic situation because those at the top have have more political andeconomic power. On the other hand, functionalist’s theory contends that the societydoes not always act out of economicself-interest and that people who strive to succeed, the society allows them but only through hard work and industry. In my view, both theories collectively explain the economic inequalities in America. The views of the conflict theory are reflected in the private sectors whose goal is to accumulate as much as possible of what they consider as “good” by any means even if it means exploiting the poor and the underprivileged. They employ the use of state machinery such as law enforcement agencies that ensure that the voice of the oppressed are not voiced.Functionalism is reflected by the state whose goal is to optimize social good through the provision of public goods and services and ensuring a fair and just system is in place that makes sure no private agency has any unfair advantages over the public.
