The Vagina Monologues is a video about womanhood and more specifically the vagina. The presenter Eve Ensler approaches the topics and issues surrounding the vagina without fear, encouraging women to talk about it. Firstly, it is important to note that although the vagina is a vital body organ, most women have a problem saying the word or even talking about. Living in a society where women tend to come second to men, the stereotypic attitudes surrounding the vagina is quite evident, to a point women choose to suffer in silence while voicing up the pain would help create awareness.
Three most important issues that present in the video include the taboos surrounding the vagina, acceptance of one’s on the vagina and the rape culture. Ensler (2015) walks around interviewing women of all age, and it is evident that some have not looked at their vaginas for years since birth due to the fear that the society has instilled surrounding vaginas, especially that that is passed down from mothers and grandmothers. Allowing individuals to open up, not only allows them to accept their body part for what it is, it helps spread the change to the present generation.
On the other hand, the video focused firmly on the rape culture, and the various types of rape that occur to women. These include gang rapes to date rapes where an individual is most likely raped by another whom she trusts. This video is refreshingly enlightening while at the same time scaring given the fact that the data about rape seems to score high especially in married people, where women rights over their bodies are diminished. While allowing these women to come out in the open and talk about these issues, other individuals are liberated since the knowledge contained in the video will always be relevant.
