Introduction

My name is Kyshiaaynna Agbejule, an undergraduate student pursuing Criminology Studies at Chicago State University. I am inviting you to take part in a research study in which your participation is entirely voluntary meaning you may or may not choose to participate. Before you make your decision, it is crucial for you to understand the purpose of the research and what it will entail. Therefore, in the following few minutes, I will explain the details of the study to you. In case you have any question as far as the research is concerned or you need some clarifications on the same, feel free to ask, and it will be my pleasure to expound on anything in details.

Purpose of This Research Study

You are being requested to be part of a research study which has been designed to investigate the relationship between juvenile crimes and level of education of the juveniles. The main participants in this research are young inmates, and that is why you are being asked to be a party. By determining the link between the two factors, the study will further attempt to devise methods through which education for the youth can be improved.

Procedures

My interest is in learning about the relationship between juvenile crimes and the level of education of the juveniles. You will be required to participate in group three interviews each taking about 30 minutes of your time whereby you will be audio and visual taped when responding to questions and contributing on anything relevant to the research. You will be allocated to a group of five other members form this instruction, and all of you will be interacting with me and other four of my co-researchers. The research will be conducted at your institution as from October 30^th, 2019 and you will be required to attend three interviews in two weeks.

Your information will be kept anonymous and confidential. By anonymous it implies that your identity will not be disclosed to anyone and other than me, no one else will know your specific responses. By confidential, it means that your answers will be assigned a random number and it is only me who will be able to identify which key corresponds to which participant. Regarding any articles I may write or presentations I may make, I will be sure to allocate you a made-up name and will not reveal any of your personal information.

Possible Risks or Discomfort

There are no known risks that you may be exposed to so far. However, in case of the development of any new information in the course of the research that may influence your participation, you will be advised about the same on time.

Possible Benefits

The benefit of this study is that your participation will help us have a better understanding of The Link between Educational Attainments and Juvenile Crimes. The information you will be contributing will guide us in designing and establish methods that will work to improve the youth education. There are no known risks to you for being a part of this research. In case anything that may put you at risk develops in the course of the study, it will be let know to you promptly.

Compensations

There will be no compensations for you participating in this study.

Confidentiality

Your identity in the research is confidential, and thus any results of this study including any form of data which may be published will not use your name or present any references that may identify you. Nonetheless, any data or the records documented due to your participation in the research may be scrutinized by the sponsor, the relevant government agencies, by the Chicago State University Institutional Review Board. Additionally, the data may be reviewed by the persons charged with conducting the study on condition that they are legally obligated to guard all the identifiable information from disclosure unless or otherwise disclosure is demanded by a court of competent jurisdiction or by the law. The researcher will make every effort to uphold your confidentiality including Allocating code names for the participants, and this will be used for the rest of the study and keeping interview transcriptions, all the study notes, and any identifiable reference information in the researcher’s personal locked file cabinet. Additionally, all the data will be eradicated once the study is completed.

Voluntary Participation

To be a participant in this research is voluntary; thus, you have the power to be or not to be part of the study. In case you decide to participate, you will be required confirm this by signing a consent form after which you will still be at liberty to withdraw at any time you see fit without providing any reasons for so doing. No relationship, if any, with the researcher, will be affected as a result of your withdrawal. If you decide to withdraw before the data collection process if over, your data will be destroyed or returned to you.
