There exists both conscious and unconscious biasness, and this is evident where the leadership believes that issues of diversities can only be handled well by the nonwhite members under the same context. Another critical problem in tokenism is that tokens face the challenge of being viewed as “others” which comes with a lack of recognition by the staff and use of extra effort to gain acceptance in the society. Besides, tokenism results in psycho-social consequences to the minority group within the community. These may include isolation, racism, tension, and loneliness.

Another challenge is that favoritism gets observed when selecting students to learn in selective schools.

Even though the United States spends remarkably a large share of GDP on higher education, there is the burden of students getting a degree from universities. Most people opt to go for public universities that charge subsidized prices but despite the subsidies people from middle-income country find it hard to cater for the cost. Appropriation from the government reduces even with the increase in the number of students enrolled in the universities. Private institutions of higher learning face a different form of financial challenge. In their case, private universities struggle to keep the charges high even though the costs are in line with the quality of education they offer. Private universities end up offering a discount on tuition fees by providing scholarships to the needy students, and this makes them operate in a tight budget. The effect of the financial crisis is also felt on the salaries of the employees of the institutions.
