The Beatles – Hey Jude

Hey Jude, don’t make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

Hey Jude, don’t be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better

And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain
Don’t carry the world upon your shoulders
For well you know that it’s a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah

Hey Jude, don’t let me down
You have found her, now go and get her
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

So let it out and let it in, hey Jude, begin
You’re waiting for someone to perform with
And don’t you know that it’s just you, hey Jude, you’ll do
The movement you need is on your shoulder
Nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah yeah

Hey Jude, don’t make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her under your skin
Then you’ll begin to make it
Better better better better better better, oh

Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude
Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude

The central subject matter for the song is the provision of encouragement. The song was initially developed as an encouragement song to help deliver an empathetic message to Julian; who was Lennon’s son. Lennon was five years when his parents were divorcing. The song was viewed as a way of providing encouragement for him to move forward in light of the difficulties that were present (Beatlesarama.com). There was a hopeful message engrained in the song. Julian received hope that despite the tribulations that had presented themselves, everything would end up being okay. The parents had divorced so definitely he was not happy, but with time he would eventually be okay.

There was confusion initially as to who the song was dedicated to. Julian’s father initially thought that the song was dedicated to him. He thought that the song was meant to encourage him in his new relationship with Yoko Ono after the divorce, but he was informed that was not the case (Beatlesarama.com).

As the song commences, it makes use of an empathetic tone. This is evidenced in the opening stanza. “Hey Jude, don’t make it bad”, “Take a sad song and make it better”, “Then you can start to make it better”. The tone changes along the way and it incorporates aspects of love. “You were made to go out and get her”, “The minute you let her under your skin”, “Then you begin to make it better”.

The artists use repetition to make the song sound even better. “Nah nah nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah, hey Jude”, this line is repeated several times as the song ends. These lyrics would not be regarded as being meaningful, but they are very catchy. These are the type of lyrics that are likely to stick in someone’s head for a long time. One is likely to find themselves singing the lyrics now and then.

The stanzas of the song are well organized. Each stanza is delving into something specific like empathy, support, love among others. The song does not make use of metaphors, but it is comprehensible and clear. “Hey Jude, don’t be afraid”, “And anytime you feel the pain, hey Jude, refrain”. These lines are very clear that the song is working on encouraging someone. The Beatles made the song effective by conveying what they feel, while trying to fit it to a given tempo and melody while making the words pleasant to the ears at the same time.

The song intrigued me more since the first time I heard it, a very close friend was undergoing a hard time as her parents had divorced. I used to sing this song to her over and over, and it worked in relieving her stress.
