The 1865 Civil War characterized the slavery status of African Americans, an issue that negatively impacted on them till the 1960s. Racial dominance was a strategy employed by the white supremacy to demonstrate violence against the Blacks. For instance, the atmosphere in Texas following the period of Presidential Reconstruction was a manifestation of racism where African Americans were subjugated to torture and control. In most case, Black women and children were subjected to trauma by the whites who raped them while on the other hand to control and power from the black men (4). In June 1865, until 1868 the Freedmen’s Bureau supervised the affairs of slaves, in this case, African Americans to transit from slavery into freedom. This act was through negotiating labor contracts, reporting of racial violence and opening schools for the African Americans. Despite the Black codes, the freed African American slaves were still subjected to the labor force.Following the 15th Amendment adopted in 1870, the Blacks had the chance to vote regardless of their color, and race. This Amendment favored the African American till 1877 after the Ku Klux Klan arose to disenfranchise blacks. Once again, the African American were enslaved again, and by 1885 to 1900, people of color were separated from the whites in hotels, depots, shops, educational institutions among others. This resulted from the Jim Crow laws that were enacted to act as a derogatory term for the slaves during the post-Reconstruction South. However, as the 19th concluded, segregation took to another level in the South, a case that saw many African Americans seeking for self-improvement mostly in areas of education. This opportunity got many of the slaves escaping from the indignities. Many of the African Americans began acquiring necessary skills in farming and domestic services. In the 1920s, most of the Black Americans migrated from the South to the North spiking an African-American cultural renaissance that later on became a widespread movement. The New Negro Movement led to the mainstream media to look at the African-American literature, art, music, and politics with seriousness. The negative stereotyping of the African-Americans reduced in 1926 to 1930s. The inclusion of African-Americans in other matters including the armed forces began in July 1948 where the executive order under President Harry S, Truman mandated the blacks to be included in the forces and to be further given equal treatment as the whites. This was groundbreaking for the African Americans to receive equality even in sports as evident in the 1950s and 1960s baseball,tennis, and basketball. To further capitalize on their freedom, the African Americans through the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) advocated for “Black Power” as they pushed for the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
