Team Management and Communication

Good management and communication are essential to any team. Lack of any key essential element in an organization is likely to cause a significant impact on a given goal. The Nut island effect is an unpleasant effect which happened to Nut Island sewage treatment plant located in Quincy, Massachusetts after breakdown occurred between the superiors and the team. The failure led to the disastrous situation at the treatment sewage plant. This paper seeks to critically analyze to outline as well as explain Nut Island effects.

The team which worked for the plant of sewage treatment was very dedicated. The team went extra miles on performing a dangerous, dirty and difficult task at the plant without complaining to the managers. The dedicated team also sacrificed extra time with no pay and even straining their budget to keep Boston clean free from pollution. In the first stage, management allowed the crucial team task which is performed behind seen. The work which is off the sight from the public eye. The team was given an opportunity to be independent, team member’s start organizing as well as managing themselves.

In the send stage, the management takes the genuinely committed team for granted and overlooks the team’s needs. The administration fails to respond during times of trouble, and this leads to the team developing the wrong mentality and feeling of betrayal. Due to ignorance and resentment from the management, the team feels isolated from the administration. These eventually result in a catastrophic problem. The team develops a us-against-the-world mentality in the third stage which keeps them away from management slight and also leads them to curtail hitches and evade enquiring for help. For instance, the team preferred contacting local activist when they run short of ferrous chloride, a substance which controls odor instead of the management. The activist will complain to her rep who would, in turn, inform the headquarters for a refill. The fourth stage of conflict involves the team making their regulations and rules to guide their operation. This happens because of the lack of external output on the guidelines. The controls cause massive destruction to the team as they show worsening of the team’s working situation and shortages in the team’s performance.

Finally, on the fifth stage, the team together with the management form misleading images of integrity that are very hard to correct. At this stage, the members fully believe in themselves, and no one can perform the task they do. The management continues to ignore the task performed by the team. The management is not able to understand their work, difficulties involved and the team’s efforts towards it. The administration also cannot listen to outsiders with good motives as they believe there is no good news. The team and management continue shinning each other until an external problem occurs. The wage found itself into the Boston Harbor without really the group intending to do so. It was a way to evade connecting with the management.

In conclusion, it’s crucial for an employer to satisfy the employee’s needs and also share the info required regularly. The problem faced by the workers can easily be controlled through communication. There exist other invisible problems which managers can’t see. Therefore it’s essential to concentrate on both the unseen and the seen. As managers always give direction, keep them involved and support the team in order to provide the best.
