Ever since I was young, I was attached to computers. Not playing games like most of my friends at that time, rather, I would fascinate over its components, the graphics, and the installed programs. I still remember using Windows 97, and the astonishing look I had when my brother brought home a Windows XP. It’s amazing graphics and the general performance were miles above Windows 97. Right there, I knew my passion; I knew that computer science would be a part of my life.
The development of Microsoft Windows over the years is a statement of how far technology has come. Besides, being a vocal point for most of the technological advancement today, computers have had their share of rough times. I remember flipping through a newspaper one day and seeing a headline, ““Hackers targeting Nepali websites.” Though I could not fathom most of the technical terms – and had to look up words in my dictionary – the article talked about the lack of proper security that allowed audit hackers to access different websites, both private and government, in Nepal. I could not understand why, but, that was the article cemented my passion for studying computers, computer security systems, and study and practice in ethical hacking.
My first step towards the field of ethical hacking was acquiring a solid foundation in computer science. Thus, I enrolled for a Diploma in Computer Science accredited by NCC, the UK in Nepal. After the completion of the course, I had developed the basic understanding of networks and some knowledge on programming. Alongside, I decided to take a certification program which earned me tow Microsoft entry level certification programs; Microsoft Technology Associate in Networking and Programming in HTML5, and CSS3 and JavaScript. Meanwhile, I got an opportunity to work for one multinational telecommunication company as an outsourcing employee, as part of the Network Operation Center (NOC) surveillance team. My responsibility included monitoring of the company’s overall network. This experience advanced my skills and knowledge on computer systems.
Afterward, I thought of improving my skills in computer security, and with all the basic networking skills, I enrolled class in EC-Council Certified Ethical Hacker course. Although I was developing and understanding basic computer technology and all part of that world, I still felt a need for computer programming in my professional life. With that, I applied for several universities, and with several acceptance letters, I chose Cameron University. The university offered me numerous opportunities of my interest, from classes to the field. For instance, besides taking programming and networking classes, I was an active member of the AITP club and the secretary of the Cameron University of Nepalese Association where I honed my leadership skills. Besides, while at AITP, I volunteered during southern region AITP conference, where I met many influential people in the field of ethical hacking and computer science. Furthermore, I participated in two hacking competition, emerging among the top ten in the first one, and scooping the top price in the second.
After two semesters at Cameron University, my appetite for the thirst for innovation and challenge was not quenched. I felt I needed a more competitive environment that would support innovation and research. And also due to earthquake back in my home country the source of my finances were limited. After consultations, I settled for San Jacinto Community College, applied and was enrolled. Here, I took Programming II class in honors and as a project, made a digital picture frame using Python and Raspberry Pi. Not only did I find everything I needed, but also received honors scholarship and I am graduating in this spring semester.
My education journey has provided me with a solid background in computer science. I have encountered first hand all the challenges of the field, having worked for a multinational company, and cemented my knowledge through research, innovation, and participation. With that, I feel that I have a purpose to continue with my journey, the zeal to continue and eager to get an opportunity to achieve my childhood dream. I need a top ranked university around the world that not only challenges students to study hard and provide the first-class knowledge, but also gives room for innovation and research. All these are the qualities University of Maryland offers. Besides, as they shape students, open doors to the future and transform the lives of students and communities, I want to be a part of it.
