From birth, the issue of sexuality tends to be shaped by society. Society cultures institute behaviours which are perceived as societal norms and works continuously to reinforce the expectations of the society in regards to how different genders interact. Despite various arguments regarding the inmate characteristic of gender being genetic makeup, there exist larger evidence from the society which creates a clear picture of social construction of sexuality by the Americans. From day-to-day observations, there exist different mechanisms of differentiating sexuality based on gender roles, interaction, economic shits and social reinforcement of gender-related behaviours. In this paper, I seek to explore how sexuality is constructed within the United States through exploring the daily lives of people, emerging stories, music and television programs that expose the construction of gender.
The first observation takes into count how institutions across the US reveal the construction of sexuality through daily and periodic activities. From this case, I observed that during jobs application, companies across the US provide forms to be filled by the applicants. In these forms, an individual is expected to fill details such as birth date, gender or sex. Through filling the forms, the social construction of sexuality is revealed where organisations tend to cluster their employees based on their sexuality. This aspect has led to stereotypes constructed by sexuality which is perceived as a concept of measuring the individual’s contributions towards particular employment. Another case I observed during school registration where students are requested to fill forms indicating their gender. In this case, the social construction of sexuality goes beyond the forms as the aspect of sexuality is used as metrics for admission at schools.
Another critical observation I made regards how newspapers report the understanding of sexuality between liberals and conservatives. According to a news report published by Jesi Egan, it illustrates the controversies surrounding social construction of sexuality. From the news article, Michael Hannon a conservative has an opinion against heterosexuality where he takes on the matter to explore whether natural conditions such as culture or sexual orientations should be used as the basis of constructing sexuality. From this news article, I understand the American society has experienced numerous transitions in the construction of sexuality as the issue is no longer perceived as societal affairs instead as an issue which is constructed by individual choices on the sexuality they want. Another critical observation made regard to how different gender interacts in the streets. From my observations, male and female figure tend to join hands while walking and each other more frequently as compared to male-male figure. This observation illustrates that the context of sexuality in the US is constructed under gender where male and female relationship depicts the ‘correct’ form of sexuality as expected by the societal norms and values. Another critical observation I made regards to how the criminal justice system handles the sexual harassment cases. Form my observations when a male harasses a female figure on a job, the matter is often taken seriously as a sexual offence as opposed to when a woman sexually harasses a man. In my reasoning, the cases demonstrate how the concept of sexuality in the US is based on the cultural norms and values as tools of defining female or male behaviours. In a nutshell, I perceive culture to be overly sexualised in the US as it’s used as an aspect of constructing sexuality among people.
