I believe the first 2-3 years of a child’s life are the most important. As stipulated by Jean Piaget, it is at this stage that cognitive development occurs. At this stage, the child is learning about the world for the first time. Everything seems new to the child. At this stage, the child uses senses to learn about the world. They learn that things exist even when they cannot see them.
A child learns about the primary aspects of life at this stage. A child learns how to speak, walk, and to internalize what is happening around. Senses such as speaking and walking if not learnt at this stage might result to a disorder. Life starts at this stage. I can remember how my 5 years old nephew was eager to learn how to walk. He could not understand why he could not walk while other did so. He could not understand logic or reasoning. All he did was mimic all he saw. Here he utilizes his sense of seeing and he learnt how to walk. A child senses develops at this stage. They want to try everything they see being done.
I think the other critical stage is the Concrete Operational Stage, which is between 7 – 11 years. At this stage, the child learns how to logically and mentally solve problems, develop other concepts such as numbers, and follow rules. The child’s understands things have limits. There are good and bad things and there are rules governing what is good and bad. The child’s mind develops at this stage to learn the logical essence of things. The child is able to understand why some things are the way they are.
Response to Mayyette Irizarry
Great thought Mayyette, I do agree that at this stage a child experiments with everything. They try to eat everything to see it is food. The child by trying out different motions with objects classifies them. They are trying to learn. They learn how to speak any languages. It is astounding how a child can learn as many languages as those he/she is exposed to. A child at this stage will want to experiment everything they see being done by those around them. The age between 2-10 is essential for learning and development. At age 7-10, the child learns new concepts such as numbers and is able to internalize them.
Response to Susanna Leigh
Hi Susanna,
Sorry about your sons, the early intervention has greatly helped them. A sense such as talking and walking are learnt at this early stage and if delayed requires therapy. Failure to acquire one of the senses may compromise another sense. These senses coordinate together for effective functioning. You are lucky to have noticed the problem at an early stage. Your sons are approaching the age of 7 years. They will enter the Concrete operational stage where they will find reason and logic. They will be able to figure out who they are and learn other new concepts such as numbers manipulation.
Response to Miliha Mirzo
Great piece of work Miliha, I agree it is at this stage a child develops social and psychological skills. The trying different motions and classify things. They experiment with everything that comes their way. They learn many things from the parents and the surrounding environment.
At the preoperational stage, a child can internalize language and speech. They are able to speak and express themselves. They can be able to be alone and play with other children like your nephew. Kids can actually be a nuisance at this stage. They demand all the attention and push limits with the adults.
