Revised “Best” Essay Reflection

Undertaking the literary analysis project was quite a good experience. There are a lot of things that one could have learned from this project. Some of them were applicable directly to the project at hand, while others would be helpful in future. Given that there were limited literary analysis projects during this period, it is safe to say that one was not comfortable with the project while commencing. There seemed to be a lot of information that could have been overwhelming to the students. However, the moment someone started working on the paper the pieces started to come together without any difficulty.

Being able to execute this project without encountering issues was enabled to a large extent by the instructions that were provided before the commencement. The instructions were quite clear, and anyone could tell what was expected of them. The good thing about these instructions was not even the explanation of what needs to be done, but the giving of the direction of how to execute these requirements. The instructions provided a set of strategies on how the writer could probably approach the project. The strategies had different dimensions but they all related to literary analysis. This gave the students a chance to examine which strategy suited them best. There are people who would have felt comfortable with analyzing the characters, there are those that would have enjoyed examining varied themes and others would have enjoyed examining the sections of the book that matter. This is something that gives the tutor an opportunity to examine what each student considers his/her strength when it comes to literary analysis.

Despite the students being given an opportunity to choose one strategy from the ones availed, there was still a learning opportunity for all that had been provided. Deciding on the strategy to choose for the analysis would not have been based on a guessing encounter. The students had reviewed all the strategies that had been availed to see which suits them best. This means that students still learned something regarding the other strategies that they did not use for the project. This is because they decided on not using the strategies after studying the requirements of these strategies. This means that even if someone decided to analyze the characters, they still learned something about analyzing themes and the concepts that ought to be noticed in the entire book.

The brainstorm project that was done before indulging in the execution of the actual project was also helpful in the completion of this project. This is because the brainstorm gave the students an opportunity to reflect on what to expect hence enhancing mental preparation. The brainstorm also created the nudge to read the book “Interpreter of Maladies” with the depth that was necessary for the completion of the final project. The tutor also had the ability to see what the students intended to do with the final project before they even commenced. This was a favorable opportunity for the tutor to make corrective measures in case she noticed that there are students that were about to fall out of the scope of what was required through relevant feedback.

On my part, other assignments done within the semester were quite helpful in the completion of this project. Among these assignments was the literacy narrative that focused on assessing different aspects relating to reading and writing. Every student was required to reflect on their journey with regards to reading and writing. Everyone had an opportunity to examine their reading and writing prospects from an early age up to the point where they are now at the university. This helped me realize when I lost touch with my reading and writing abilities. It was something on and off at the different levels of education. Through the assignment, I had the ability to figure out what was causing the lack of interest in advancing these skills. Upon the realization of what I was doing wrong, I took the initiative of improving these two skills in the course of this semester. This has been very helpful since it gave me the ability to improve my competence with regards to these skills. The improvement came a long way in helping me to accomplish this final project with ease. This is because my reading and writing abilities had improved, and were necessary for the final project.

The assignment of word choice was also very helpful. This is because through the assignment I learned several aspects regarding the use of topic sentences in paragraphs.  This concept was helpful while undertaking the literacy analysis project. Learning about topic sentences is important as they tend to play different roles. Among them is that a topic sentence helps to support or substantiate the paper’s thesis statement, unifies a paragraph’s content while helping to direct the order of sentences and gives readers an idea of the subject that is going to be discussed in the paragraph. A good topic sentence should always have a point to make, and most of the times it has to make a statement that would be considered as an argumentative claim. This is because a paper is supposed to persuade a reader to see the writer’s way of reasoning. Even when they do not agree, having strong topic sentences helps to keep subtle arguments in their mind when they read.

The comments provided by the tutor after the presentation of the first draft were very helpful in the completion of the final draft too.  When writing the first draft, there are some issues with the project that a writer will not easily get. This is because it is not easy to criticize one’s own work despite how analytical someone wants to be. In the case of assessing a theme in the stories, the tutor provides a comment in case a student is going out of the scope of the theme of study. This is something that usually happens as a student tries to expand his/her content to fit the desired word count. It results in the inclusion of irrelevant content that the tutor will easily advise for removal after reading the first draft. The ideas generated have to relate to the topic chosen in a sufficient manner.

The tutor’s comments also make it possible for the students to elaborate the ideas being generated even further. This is made possible by the tutor asking questions like what does this imply? What does this prove? Why does all this happen?  These are the types of comments that make a student reflect more on the ideas they generate in their papers. It provides an opportunity to expand these ideas even further and come out as being more clear. This is something good as it helps the students to understand the extent to reach with the next assessment they will be involved with.

Despite the comments being helpful, there was also some bottle-necks involved. Some comments made to the assignment would have been more helpful if the tutor tried to elaborate even further. It is difficult for a student to act on a comment that they do not understand. The comments might be clear to the tutor, but become problematic in the interpretation of the student.  In my example, there is this question that I received severally “quote framing?”. Even upon trying to find out what this meant my efforts were futile. I would have appreciated the comment more if it had been elaborated in a manner that I would comprehend better. It is difficult to act on a comment there is no clear understanding of what it actually implies.

Another thing that would help students tackle this project in future in a better way is by indulging in more literary analysis assignments in the semester. This would involve doing assignments that relate to these issues. This will help in grasping the relevant concepts. The ideas gathered here will be beneficial in writing the final literary analysis project.
