Reflections on Healthy Eating Habits

An individual’s attitude is an essential aspect to sustaining a healthy dietary lifestyle. Minors living with their parents learn healthy eating habits from what they are taught at home and the influence of the media. Before undertaking the class discussions and research, my opinion on dietary habits was that it takes a combination of forces to constitute a healthy eating diet for aperson. After reviewing responses of my classmates and interacting with several secondary contents on the topic, I have reinforced my views that it takes discipline from a young age to help an individual make the right decisions regarding the food they consume.

The perspectives of some of my clients regarding instilling proper eating habits for children from a young age agree with mine. Several posts shared an outlook which I would like to acknowledge: early dietary education both in school and at home is an important factor towards helping individuals adopt healthy eating habits. Nevertheless, some posts rightly argued that individuals are responsible for their eating habits. While I agree with this perspective, public health policies have a significant role to play towards helping individuals make healthy eating choices. Government policies play a critical role in aligning the food choices of the public with their desire to live healthy lives (Gorski and Roberto). As such, the health policies of this country also have a significant role to play towards promoting the right diet for the public.

My classmates explored various measures the government can use to promote healthy eating. Some of the suggestions were: curtailing the negative influence of junk foods sold at fast food joints, introducing, incentives for organizations with the view of enrolling employees to the gym, and tightening rules on weight loss prescription pills. I agree with these views. Further, employers could use policy tools such as vending contracts to guarantee the availability of healthy foods at the workplace (“Healthy Eating”). Overall, the research and discussion posts have reinforced my opinion that several factors including government policy, family education, and commercial influences contribute to healthy eating habits of a person.
