Dear Recipient

Project Research Reflection

I am writing this letter to thank you for the support you have given throughout the project. Your ideas came in handy in providing me with the appropriate guideline on how to handle such a challenging topic. As you know, for two months I have carried out research on popular culture and its connection of socio-cultural and economic aspect of my society. I have conducted several studies and looked through different sources on the representation of race in pop culture. I choose the subject of race as it remains a source of contention among members of society.

Furthermore, I am particularly affected by racism, as I am a black boy from Compton. Therefore, I have firsthand experience with racism. During the two months of research, I got to learn a lot from extensive reading, observation, and analysis of this subject matter. My critique went far and wide, and I explored several textual sources, as well as pop culture media artifacts including, movies, music, news, advertisements, and media programs. Currently, popular culture has infiltrated into different mainstream media channels and social media platforms.

In the sources, I explored I discovered that race links with several socio-economic and political disparities such as poverty, uneven distribution of resources, employment, and the criminal justice system. I also carried out a comparative analysis of the representation of race in the past and present times, exploring the connection between slavery and present-day neo-colonialism. I particularly noticed that blacks are the most marginalized group.

My research questions included the following; what is the representation of the black race in Hollywood? Has popular culture provided a remedy for racism or is it merely fueling the fire? What are some of the socio-economic and political disparities explored in pop culture texts and artifacts? What are the racial stereotypes that are predominantly used to propagate racism in popular culture? From my analysis, I came to the discovery that racism is deeply rooted in society.  As such, popular culture only mirrors social happenings.

Yours Sincerely
