- The paper discusses the reconceptualization of curriculum studies through the experiences of the author from his time in university. The notion that curriculum studies require a reconceptualization was highly emphasized to ensure quality in education. I totally agree with way in which the author digs into the historical perspectives of the subject by attributing its rise to past scholars. I have a similar ideology of appreciating scholars whose work resulted in the advancement of education.
- Traditional curriculum: This is one of the three kinds of curriculum as taught by McDonald. Being the very first type of curriculum, it followed Tyler’s ends-means methodology and also sought consensus through its perspectives. Although effective in the past, traditional curriculum has failed to evolve and cannot be effective in today’s modern world. That notwithstanding, I still support the traditional views of McDonald for their effectiveness in the past.
- Conceptual Curriculum: This kind of curriculum was a scientific and empirical model of learning based on experts. I think the idea of designing curriculum approach based on the structural empiricists was a noble idea in the reconceptualization of curriculum studies. I am in support of the conceptual kind of curriculum and think it was very effective when properly implemented.
- Individual Curriculum: This theory is somewhat different because it insists on the individual being emancipatory. This method considers curriculum as a way of raising the self consciousness of individuals. In addition, I laud the curriculum method for its role in liberating individuals through dialogue, practice and reflections centered on the individual.
- Pinar’s Currere: In its application, the word means to run in a similar way to how a current flows. Further, Pinar used the term to insinuate a form of tracking a curriculum in its course. In the traditional curriculum, it was considered a design track through which education was taught in schools. The methodology is effective since it incorporates one’s own experiences. For instance, biology as a subject is related to the student as they interact with it and experience thus shaping the student’s reflection of the curriculum.
- Pinar’s Experience: Still, Pinar was instrumental in the definition of experience as regards the importance of curriculum. Accordingly, experience is framed through interaction where one enters water and both water and the person change. The implication of this is evident in curriculum where a student interacts with content in the learning process. I think experience is really important since it sticks even after one is done with their school work. The interrelatedness of curriculum and experience is evidenced by the relationship in meaning. I think it is through this interrelation that the learning process is attained following the connection of reflection and action.
- Biography: Whenever one experiences something new, it is different because it happens at a different place and time thus forming unique experiences. Extensionally, biography is a culmination of many experiences through different time period s and places. I think there is a need for reflection on biography as it helps in the utilization of ideas for personal benefit as well as aiding in curriculum and school education. I also think the four unique movements of autobiography as discussed by Pinar make a lot of sense. In fact, regressive, progressive, analytical and synthetical movements form my opinion on curriculum and school.
