Positive behavior support (PBS) is a function based and validated approach aimed at replacing challenging behaviors with socially accepted behavior. Its main idea is to reduce the aversive interventions especially in schools such as suspension and punishments. This will in turn lead to individual and systematic change. The school-wide positive behavior support is roled out in schools. It instills in children the elements of caring, respecting others, responsibility and taking care of the property. Students are educated on such issues as respecting teachers and respecting other students. Students are encouraged to be academically involved meaning that teachers should teach while students should listen. This way everyone participates in promoting personal, academic growth as well as the growth of others. When students fail to respect the teachers, this not only affects the teacher but also affects fellow students.
From responses of teachers, parents, and students towards PBS, it is evident that the approach is successful in schools. The children on their part have approached the idea with an open mind understanding that it is for their good. The teachers are very positive about the approach and are very appreciative to the children. The parents, on the other hand, are praising the approach for the changes they have observed in their children. It is very clear from everyone that the approach is very efficient in terms of shaping the children to be better.
On a school culture, the impact and effectiveness of the School-wide Positive Behavior Support (SW-PBS) can be evaluated by analyzing the number of children being referred to the office for indiscipline monthly. This will determine whether the approach is successful in terms of instilling the elements of responsibility, respect, and care on the children. If the number is increasing with time, then the approach is not performing as expected. The expectation is that the number should reduce with time. Again, by identifying the number of children being identified for special education will also help in evaluating the success of the approach. Special education is referred to those students who have a hard time accepting the elements of the PBS. This number is also expected to reduce with time.
SW-PBS can change the school culture like Central Middle School. Students, especially at the middle level, are at a stage in life where they expect to learn what is socially expected of them. If not handled well at this stage, they may graduate to high school without a slight knowledge of the prosocial behaviors. Again, with the different responses from teachers, students, and parents, it is evident that this approach is perceived well in schools and has changed the school cultures where it is already in motion.
What I learned for my class is that the element of respect and caring is very important in the school setting. When teachers teach, and students listen, everyone is academically participating. Teachers need to be respected, and students need to acknowledge that there are rules and regulations to be followed. Rules and regulations exist everywhere in the society today, and children should learn to recognize this not only in school but also outside the school.
