Directions: Type your outline following this format.

  1. Title (Make it interesting):

Hurricanes Preparedness and Management

  1. Introduction
    1. Start with an intriguing question or a surprising fact:

Cyclonic circulations in a hurricane are caused by two forces acting on the air which include pressure gradient and Coriolis force. Air rises to the center of the hurricane causing a lower pressure area below.

  1. Briefly explain the importance of your topic to your reader:
    • Why should your reader care about this natural disaster? Why is this natural disaster a problem? (Briefly explain the problem, saving more details for later.)

Hurricanes are very disastrous in terms of property damage and loss of lives. Besides killing people, hurricanes also make people homeless through damaging their homes and flooding.

  1. Write your thesis statement (How can people be prepared for this natural disaster?):

People should be well prepared before, during and after a hurricane to minimize losses of lives and damage to property.

  1. Definition:
    1. Define the natural disaster (example: What is avolcano?).

As defined in the Environmental Encyclopaedia, a hurricane is a strong rotating storm which forms mainly over warm tropical waters and is usually accompanied by thunder, rain and lightning

  1. What causes this natural disaster?

Hurricanes are caused by weather and climate factors such as global warming and water vapor.

  1. (Optional) Add any other important information about this natural disaster:

It is important for all people to be prepared well in advance for a hurricane. It is not good to assume that you are safe, since there is no certainty of the exact area that would be affected.

  1. What source(s) are you using for this section of your paper?

  1. Problems(explain the main problems that this natural disaster causes. For example, how does this disaster affect people, property, or the environment? How much do these disasters cost?)
    1. Problem 1:

Hurricanes lead to the loss of many lives. For example the Hurricane Katrina which occurred in the year 2005 led to the death of 1800 people and Hurricane Ike that occurred that occurred in 2008 resulted to more than 600 deaths.

  1. Problem 2:

Hurricanes lead to the destruction of property. For example the Hurricane Katrina caused $60 billion in damage.

  1. (Optional) Problem 3:

Hurricanes cause flooding, destroying vegetation and other resources in the process.

  1. Solutions (explain how to be prepared before, during, and/or after this natural disaster.)
    1. Preparation before:

Before a hurricane strikes, trim and remove damaged trees, bookmark your states website for quick access to storm updates, check emergency kits, reinforced and retrofitted susceptible house areas and repair drainage facilities.

  1. Preparation during:

During a hurricane, one should stay indoors away from windows, glass doors and skylights. In case of flooding, turn off electricity at the main breaker.

  1. Preparation after:

After a hurricane, keep in touch with government updates, return to residence after only after it is declared safe and take photos of damaged properties for the sake of insurance claim.

  1. (Optional) Explain how the government or other organizations can help before or after a natural disaster.

In times of hurricanes, the government can help by providing updates about the storm and providing temporary residence to those affected. Other organizations such as Red Cross can provide emergency services to those injured.

  1. Conclusion
    1. Restate the main problems :
  2. Hurricanes lead to the loss of many lives. For example the Hurricane Katrina which occurred in the year 2005 led to the death of 1800 people.
  3. Hurricanes lead to the destruction of property. For example the Hurricane Katrina caused $60 billion in damage.
  4. Hurricanes cause flooding destroying crops. Gases emitted to the atmosphere also cause climatic changes
    1. Restate the main solutions:
  5. Before a hurricane strikes, trim and remove damaged trees, bookmark your states website for quick access to storm updates, check emergency kits, reinforced and retrofitted susceptible house areas and repair drainage facilities.
  6. During a hurricane, one should stay indoors away from windows, glass doors and skylights. In case of flooding, turn off electricity at the main breaker.
  7. After a hurricane, keep in touch with government updates, return to residence after only after it is declared safe and take photos of damaged properties for the sake of insurance claim.
    1. Write a final comment (choose one strategy below):
      • Give your readers advice on what they should do,
      • OR Give a prediction (if X happens, then Y will follow)
