Adiele, E. E., & Abraham, N. (2013). Achievement of Abraham Maslow’s needs hierarchy theory among teachers: Implications for human resource management in the secondary school system in Rivers State. Journal of Curriculum and Teaching, 2(1), p 140-144.
This article is about a study done to determine the achievement of the Abraham Maslow’s need hierarchy theory among secondary level teachers in the Rivers State Nigeria. The study was done on a sample of 500 teachers from 245 schools (Adiele & Abraham, 2013). As reflected in their low level of achievement in shelter, hunger, belongingness, security, affection and friendship needs, it was revealed that the teachers had insignificant achievement in the lower and higher order of the Abraham Maslow’s theory.
The study concluded that in the productivity of teachers, motivation is very important. The motivation of teachers is affected by fulfilment of hunger needs, security needs, shelter needs, friendship, security needs and affection needs. Like other professions, secondary schools teachers are socially not recognised as other professionals. This is widely reflected in the poor status accorded to the teaching profession not only by the society but by the students themselves.
To the human resource management of the secondary schools, this implies that teachers in most cases will involve themselves in fraudulent activities such as malpractices in the management of funds to make ends meet. In addition, the poor quality of secondary schools education shows that teachers are highly demotivated (Adiele & Abraham, 2013). With low motivation, the teachers can not be able to carry out their duties efficiently.
The study was done in the River States and a considerable sample of teachers was used. The results revealed that teachers are not motivated resulting to low quality of education in the states. The methodology used is validated. The questionnaire used was designed and validated by experts. It was also pretested and later administered. The response rate was also very promising. The results of the study can be used to imply to the whole Rivers States. However, i tend to feel that it cannot be applied in the whole country of Nigeria. There might be other problems existing in Rivers State that are not in other states.
This article is useful to the teaching profession in that it shows how low motivation can affect not only the level of education but the teachers themselves. As humans teachers have needs which are arranged in order. When one need is fulfilled, it is no longer important and the next need is activated (Adiele & Abraham, 2013). The teachers will do anything to meet their needs.
The different needs largely affect the motivation of teachers. This is the reason there are cases of fraudulent activities such as exam malpractices in secondary schools. The teachers are not motivated and thus try to meet their needs using other ways. The secondary schools managements should ensure that the teachers are well looked after to increase their motivation for the benefit of the students.
