The article makes references to some of the scientific steps that were used in the development of insulin and other drugs. Before the identification of inclusion as an ideal hormone in the regulation of blood sugar levels, numerous experiments were conducted on rats and rabbits. The tests aided in the determination of the side effects of the hormone on human beings. While both Macleod and Banting were issued with the Nobel Prize for inventing insulin, many ethical issues in the process led to the development of the drug (Doke et al. 225).
Animal testing remains a hot debate with many people opposing research and experiments that subject animals to suffering, injuries, and death.Animal testing is common in both the pharmaceutical and beauty industries. However, there are ongoing efforts to ban products that use animal testing during the production processes. While there is the need to uphold human safety, this ought not to be done at the expense of animals. On the contrary,there are other alternatives may be used to determine the effects on human beings(The Senate Commission on Animal Protection and Experimentation, 11).
Current, animal testingis viewed as being cruel and expensive hence the need to come up with better options. Some of the possibilities include computer-medaling techniques, vitro methods, and sillco models. In the case of vitro methods, there is the use of human stem cells. There are not limited to any species inexpensive as compared to animal testing. In the case of insulin development, the use of vitro methods or computer-modeling technique would have lowered the budget and the death of animals. The new development indicates that it is possible to have significant inventions in medicine while equally protecting animals.
