Introduction

Marijuana which is also known by other names such as dagga, ganja, hemp, Mary Jane and bhang just to mention but a few has been a matter of discussion for several decades. It is derived from the cannabis plant and for long time there have been discussion on whether or not its consumption should be legalized. In this research proposal, i intend to explore why marijuana should be legalized in Canada. The research proposal will outline how legalization of the product could be of paramount importance to individuals and the government of Canada.

The importance of this research and why it is worth researching is because there are several theories and stereotypes which have been associated with the consumption of marijuana. For instance, several governments have classified it as a “gateway drug” a claim which has not been scientifically proved. There are also several individual who consume the drug for recreational purposes and not as a result of addiction. It is for this reason that I predict as a result of this research, legalization of marijuana in Canada can result to a significant decrease in the consumption of the drug especially to the teenagers (Punch, 2006). The research will also outline the major benefits that will be associated with the legalization of the product ranging from economical, health, morality and human rights just to mention but a few.

Methodology

During the research process, both primary and secondary sources of data will be used. Several books and journals which have discussed the topic will be widely used in this research process. I will read widely and wildly on how organizations, individuals and federal states have excelled in their attempt to legalize marijuana. I also intend to visit those countries where the legalization of the plant has been effective (Denscombe, 2012). This will be a vital tool for getting first hand information on the experience of where the legalization has been successful. It is at this juncture that interviews and questionnaires can be of great importance during the research process.

The research process will also involve surveying and conducting interviews in several parts of the country. This will be a god step in trying to understand the peoples take on the topic. Public forums in the major cities will be important as this will give the residents a platform to give their views on the topic. Questionnaires, interviews and public debates will be an essential tool in this research process. I plan to examine and analyze how the sources I find use language to discuss the legalization of marijuana (Wood & Kerr, 2011). Although the research aims at arguing for the legalization of marijuana, I also intend to outline the counter argument against legalizing the drug. The research process will be a well organized exercise guided with a well drafted action plan. The action plan will outline the time frame within which the research process should be concluded. This will be very important to ensure that the research process is completed in a timely manner and with the stipulated resources.

Research question

The aim of this research process is to ascertain why legalization of marijuana can be of importance to Canada. The research process intends to provide answers to the following question;

• Why marijuana should be legalized?
• What are the benefits realized by countries and states that have legalized marijuana?
• What are the costs/benefits associated with the legalization of marijuana?
• What is the current trend in the legalization of marijuana?

Importance of the research process

Every research process should be of great help to the researcher especially if it provides answer to the research questions. This research process aims to have a better conclusion on why legalization of marijuana would be a noble course in the republic of Canada. The research should convince those who are against the idea of marijuana legalization to come to light with the advantages associated with the legalization. The first beneficiary of this research paper will be the government of Canada. This is because the paper will outline the major benefits that the government will realize after the legalization of the plant. These ranges from increased tax collection, decongested justice systems and improved health standards of the citizens just to mention a few (Babbie, 2009).

Other interested parties in the research process would be the human rights activists across the globe. This is because denying individuals right to recreation has been a major concern to several human right activists. Arresting and punishing a person for a crime he or she commits to herself is considered as oppressive and against human rights. The research process will also unearth the medical benefits associated with the use of marijuana. This makes the research process very important to medical practitioners who will be able to understand how effective marijuana has been in that sector.

The research would also be of great importance to the farmers in Canada. This is because it is derived from a hemp plant. By legalizing the use of marijuana in Canada, the farmers will have a opportunity to cultivate the plant which can be very instrumental in uplifting their living standards. It is for these reasons that I predict the paper would be very valuable to both the government and the noble citizens of the republic of Canada.
