Literacies: Old and New

I my view, I do not agree with Carr’s assertion that the internet is a distraction. The internet is the most informative thing that the human kind has created. The internet is the home of all kind of information from news and educative books and articles. We as college students use the internet to study regularly. It is a lot easier to search something on the internet than manually in the library. One can access different ideas about something simultaneously. It is hard to read more than one print book at the same time. However, when using the internet, it is easy to search for the desired ideas.

In his article, “How the Internet is Revolutionizing Education,” Myer argues that the internet gives the long-time learners the tools to become self-taught thinkers. Colleges and universities have created online materials for use by students (Myers, para. 1).  The internet just makes information easy and convenient to access. Though at times it can be distractive, its’ advantageous out way the distraction factor.  Personally, I concentrate when I put mind into it. Concentration depends with the student not the type of material being used.

In the developing countries, students have access to print books and articles. However, they can still access information over the internet. It is a lot easier to search information on the internet rather than buy a printed book. The use of internet is almost like free education. A mobile phone in the hands of an impoverished student is better. The student will have access to all kind of information. Students in the developing countries have greatly benefited from the internet. They have access to educative materials that are otherwise not accessible in print form.

Response to Emily Kiser

Hi Emily, great work there. In this era of technology, the use of internet is inevitable. The internet is the source of all kind of information good and bad. We as college students use the internet to study regularly. It is a lot easier to search something on the internet than manually in the library. However, I agree with you that one is easily distracted when studying over the internet. With the availability of so much information, one is tempted to explore other things besides the class work. How can one concentrate on none kind of information when the information available is infinite?

Response to Daniel Corder

Hi Daniel, I like the way you have approached your argument. The internet is not the only source of distraction. There are other issue when combined create a distraction. If the internet were really such a distraction, we would not be using it for accessing and handing in assignments. The system has been fully digitalized. Books and articles are available online. Why would I go to the library while I can access books and articles at the comfort of my house? I agree that the internet is distractive but it all depends with the student. Students can always concentrate on what they put their mind into.

Response to Joseph Starrs

Hi Joseph, thoughtful piece of work. I agree with you that majority of the people are easily distracted by the internet.  It is hard to keep off all the informative websites available when one is young. However, the internet is the home of any kind of information. One can access different ideas about something simultaneously. It is hard to read more than one print book at the same time. However, when using the internet, it is easy to search for the desired ideas. In addition, internet is easily accessible and convenient. One can access it from everywhere at any time.
