Introduction
Lahey Medical Center is known globally for its clinical experience. It is also the leading provider for a variety of health care services for not only residents but also visitors of Essex and Middlesex counties based in Massachusetts. The organization is a non-profit group and physicians led. It provides quality services in every specialty. Consequently, the organization has about 1,100 volunteers 5000 employees and 500 physicians (Lahey Hospital & Medical Center 2). In the modern organizations, creativity, and innovation, motivation, groups and teamwork, persuasion, leadership, communication and organizational power are essential for successful operations. This essay will focus on motivation in the workplace, leadership, and innovation within the Lahey Medical Center. It will analyze the current situation and provide recommendations for improvement.
The Situation
The hospital provides a highly competitive and innovative benefits package. The benefits program offered plays a critical role in exhibiting the organization’s commitment to its colleagues. Employees enjoy different employment benefits. This acts as a way of motivation. However, the staff is scheduled to work for about 20 hours weekly for them to qualify for the benefits (Lahey Hospital & Medical Center 18). Additionally, the program provides all employees with extra benefits, and they have the opportunity to choose the ones that benefit them. Moreover, the institution provides intensive training to employees. This makes them be at par with the modern day medical services and remain competitive in the market. The mentioned benefits motivate them hence resulting in low customer turnout.
The firm has employed effective strategies in ensuring that all of its employees are prepared for all forms of emergencies. This is because the specialists are trained to take care of all medical conditions. The center has a new emergency department, which ensures that they cater for more patients medically. For example, about 110 patients are medically treated daily. Lahey Medical Center is strategically located in major highways.
Innovation
Lahey Medical Center has embraced innovation. The facility has intraoperative radiation therapy. This therapy has been used for the treatment of breast cancer in the first stage of cancer. This technique is defined as customized radiation therapy form, and it is administered to patients at lumpectomy. This technique enables the surgeon who is under a radiation oncologist’s guidance to direct the radiation to the identified tumor during surgery. This makes the patient not to require follow-up treatment an aspect that saves on costs (Lahey Hospital & Medical Center 2).
Empowering Patients
The facility has powerful research capabilities that contribute to effective decision-making and sharing information with patients and physicians. Under the leadership of Zoher Ghogawala who is the chairman of neurosurgery department, the firm has focused on comparing the effectiveness of conservative, pharmaceutical and treating options, providing health care providers and patients with new information on the risks, value, and benefits of the choices available to them. This has enabled patients to take control of their lives because they are well informed about their illness as well as available treatment options.
One of the key initiatives of the facility is the establishment of Spine Research Center. According to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center (17), presently, there are efforts to build a prospective national facility that would generate data on the comparative data, costs, safety, and effectiveness of surgical and non-surgical treatments for different spinal disorders. This will make the institution to deal with different spinal cases and administer the right treatment.
Evaluate the Hospital’s Performance
In the United States, it is estimated that more than 55 adults suffer from spinal cord disorder. It is due to compression of the nerve roots and spinal cord, interference with blood flow resulting in different neurological problems. There has been the debate on this form of treatment. Even though the conditions of some patients are likely to improve, they will further require surgery to improve the condition. Some of the surgical options that the facility has opted for include ventral surgery, dorsal surgery and laminoplasty. This has enabled the medical facility to be of preference for most patients (Touster, et al. 17).
Leadership
There were legislative changes that altered the way providers are paid for the delivered medical services. At the facility’s affiliates and other health facilities across the nations, most leaders have not only re-evaluated their health options but also identified various ways to reduce costs and improve quality. Nonetheless, the mergers between providers were immense as the facility’s leaders adopted enacted laws. For example, Lahey Medical Center focused on establishing an organization that will succeed in the 21st-century medical entity. They realized this through investment and partnerships that are likely to enhance quality. For example, at the facility, Dr. Grant focused on improving quality and minimizing the existing variations in care and increasing value linked to the cost of care. Leaders believed that this would enhance the patients’ outcomes and experience. Besides, within a time frame of two years, employees delivered all the goals. This made them enjoy top rankings in the health care system. This is because the management ensured that patients obtained all the care. The facility also reports positive outcome in various areas of the patient satisfaction scores in sectors such as pain control, communication and the provided information (Lahey Hospital & Medical Center 18).
Leaders ensure that there is accountability within the organization. This made the firm to shift its model from a fee-based care entity to a value based services. As a result, it ensured that all patients even those with complex medical conditions were taken care of. Within the facility, physicians are leaders who are characterized who work with high-performance teams. Members share the responsibility of all patients as a team. The caregivers collaborate with others and share the important information with the objective of offering the right care within the set environment. This minimizes duplication of tests, use of expensive diagnostic tools and ensures that the focus is on ensuring that patients who have been diagnosed with chronic conditions are healthy and do not stay long in the hospital. Additionally, the goal is not only to manage but also understand population risk.
Citing Touster, et al. (16), if an organizational model cares for a high population, then there is a possibility of the health system mitigating the risks associated with caring for patients who need complex and expensive care. Alternatively, large institutions, which aggregate more lives enjoy additional benefits compared to small ones. Nonetheless, large facilities such as Lahey Medical Center take care of patients who have complex conditions. Consequently, their patient population is usually sicker than the rest of the community.
Recommendations
With this kind of challenges, in managing the costs, it is important for the facility to remove all the wastes without interfering with quality. A good example is implementing the guidelines on blood transfusions at the center.
To realize the objective, the facility requires forward thinking leaders. For more than two decades, Dr. Grant has led to clinical performance, clinical improvements, successful integration and patient safety. The objective is to improve patients’ outcome and experience. Presently the leaders are well trained. Dr. Grant is a respected leader and employed transformational roles at the best medical facilities across the world. Throughout the facility, leaders have focused on addressing the challenges. For example, leaders have focused on different strategies not only to prevent illness but also reduce risks and promote healthy lifestyles such as paying special attention and building teamwork. This should be reflected in the entire organization.
Leaders’ vision is to enhance the depth of services via the strategic partnership with different medical facilities and research institutions. This has enabled the organization to strengthen coordination of all its patients’ population. The strategy will assist patients to access quality care. Teamwork is a key component of the organization. This will encourage innovation among employees.
Improving the Organization’s Effectiveness
The firm has focused on improving its effectiveness. The organization has partnered with Honoring Choices Massachusetts. The Honoring Choices program has assisted the firm to facilitate healthcare discussions with families and patients and in providing personalized care and quality care throughout the lives of the patients.
Lahey Health critically responds to the demands of the community. The center provides quality and cost-effective care to all patients. Haley Health has the passion for caring for the sick. In care delivery, Lahey Health has effective staff because it employs forward thinkers who are so motivated to advance their knowledge in the medicine, hence benefit the entire community.
The firm’s major stakeholders are benefactors who are the reason for its success. The benefactors have enabled the firm to improve its services. This enables them to offer the best care. The community supports the center’s mission, and this has benefitted both patients and their families. This should be promoted because it attracts additional resources.
The firm and its leadership have employed different strategies, which have enabled it to be a successful leader in the provision of the healthcare system. It also depends on offering affordable and best care. The firm also provides high-quality healthcare services to all patients in the system. It has effectively taken care of patients, attracting partners and pioneering innovation to ensure a physical led model. The Health Center has different affiliates, which has made it a successful entity. However, there is the need for expansion to cater for patients in various geographical areas. According to Parand, et al. (5), this will ensure that the organization treats geographical dispersed and patients suffering from chronic conditions. Therefore, there is the need for the facility to expand from a standalone medical center to be an emergency, tertiary and flagship hub.
In conclusion, it is evident that the firm is focused on offering quality and affordable health care facilities to patients with chronic health conditions. Effective leadership is essential for successful operations of an organization. The staff has the passion for innovative medical care. Due to the increase in the number of patients over the years, it is important for the institution to expand geographically. The organization is a non-profit medical system that relies on contributions from different benefactors such advocates and patients who depend on the healthcare. It is evident that employees’ motivation, effective leadership, and innovation are essential for any healthcare facility.
