After taking the self-assessments, I decided to share the results and insights with my father. He is someone that I trust and respect deeply. Growing up I always looked up to him, as I saw him as a hero based on how he was able to organize most of the things that were his responsibility. He was well liked by people and had this ability to influence others with ease since he was so charming and authoritative at the same time.
Upon reviewing my assessments, he looked at me and chuckled. He told me that he has always known I had the potential to be a leader. This comment came about while he was reviewing the assessment of the readiness for the leadership role. He believes that I can be depended upon as this is something that I have shown since a tender age. My caring for other people’s need was also raised. He told me that this is a very good trait for any leader as it helps in knowing what is going on with the employees one is tasked to handle. It ensures that their personal issues do not affect their professional life. However, he was not impressed on the fact that I seem to put personal success ahead of the team accomplishments and the way I am not willing to listen to people while they complain about their jobs. He told me that listening to people complain sometimes can be a good way of understanding that things are not going as it would be expected.
My father thought that I was doing well on the self-confidence aspect. He thought that the score was desirable since he could not want to see me as being very high self-confident. Based on his past experience, people that came out as being overly confident are always viewed as being arrogant. Most of the time it is always their way that seems right and they rarely have confidence on others to deliver positive results. However, he was concerned on how I am cautious when it comes to making changes in my life. He believes that a leader needs to have the ability of embracing change at all times given that it is inevitable regardless of how one tries to resist. He also believes that self-confidence ensures that one is not afraid of challenging the status quo and this helps to push the boundaries to help achieve better things.
However, my father was not impressed with my proactive personality prospects. He seems to hold this personality with high regard. He thinks that we live in a world that is constantly changing, and there is a need of being at par with the changes taking place. According to him, being a reactive leader comes with a high degree of risk. This is because the damage might be unmanageable regardless of the measures being taken depending on its extent. He criticized me more on the notion that upon finding a satisfactory career I would relax. He advised on being ambitious and always working to get something even better since no one knows what tomorrow holds for us. Some skills can become obsolete given the level with which technology is being adopted. He concluded on this area by saying that if I adopted a proactive personality, it would play a significant role in ensuring that I succeed in my endeavours as a leader.
When it comes to leadership style, he gazed for a moment before giving a comment. He thought that demonstrating the traits of a participative leader was a good thing. This is because the aspect would help in ensuring that the workplace environment is always positive due to the satisfaction that accrues to the employees. However, he was quick to mention that it is always good to exercise moderation with the preferred style of leadership. Despite the participative leadership being an appealing model, it might not work at all times. He pointed that it is good to assess a situation before deciding on the style that would be adopted. He went ahead to mention several leaders who had been very successful in their capacities while using autocratic leadership. He told me that the success was attributed to the fact that this form of leadership was more suited to the prevailing situations of that time.
