Five Pillars: Fasting: “You who believe, fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may be mindful of God. For those who can fast only with extreme difficulty, there is a way to compensate—feed a needy person. But if anyone does good of his own accord, it is better for him, and fasting is better for you, if only you knew. It was in the month of Ramadan that the Quran was revealed as guidance for mankind, clear messages giving guidance and distinguishing between right and wrong. So any one of you who sees in that month should fast, and anyone who is ill or on a journey should make up for the lost days by fasting on other days later. God wants ease for you, not hardship. Significance and Relevance

Religion continues to shape modern culture including the values held across the world. In truth, the teachings contained in religious books have significant influence on the way people treat each other. Today, the world is in a crisis as everyone considers their cultural and religious views more superior than those of others. This ethnocentric approach to world’s problems has resulted in the deepening of radical views and the proliferation of terrorism. However, religion itself has the power of averting most of the problems associated with the practice. The relevance of the highlighted Islamic teachings cannot therefore be underestimated in today’s modern world. Everywhere, Islamic teachings continue to influence cultural trends as well as behavioral changes in humans. The rightful interpretation of Islamic teachings has the potential of facilitating human integration.

The teachings selected in this work have widespread significance and relevance in today’s world. For instance, the Quran asserts that true piety is only attained through giving out what one cherishes most (Quran 3:92). This verse particularly encourages followers to share what they have with those that are in need. In addition, the Hadiths portray religious leaders as normal human beings who can forget and should therefore be reminded. The teaching emphasizes the importance of listening to others especially regarding the interpretation of religious writings. These Hadiths has application sin today’s world as radicals can listen to more compassionate interpretations of the Quran. Still, fasting is identified as a key pillar through which followers can give to the needy. Again, this teaching encourages compassion as a virtue among Muslims. Lastly, Islamic ethics dictate that everyone is equal regardless of their faith of ethnicity. This last teaching is related to the challenge of globalization and westernization (Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, video 1, minute 1:17). For the longest time, western culture has been seen as the dominating tribe in the world. However, Islamic ethics are against this view and encourage people to treat each other with equal respect.
