Is Mythology Still Important?

In chapter 2 of the book, there is a quote that asserts “mythical stories are, or seem, arbitrary, meaningless, absurd, yet nevertheless they seem to reappear all over the world.” I do not agree with this assertion since I think mythology is still important in the society due to the value of knowledge that it brings about people’s culture.

Mythology is important due to several reasons. To begin with, it tends to bring value when used as a narrative in literature and offers timeless and universal themes in the process. It also helps in providing insight into other places and times. This helps in assessing how much humankind has in common (Leeming 211). Mythology also makes up a huge part of peoples heritage. It is something that reminds people of whom they are and where they came from.

The film The Thief of Bagdad (1940) provides a good example of a mythological film. King Ahmad after being cast out of Bagdad joins forces with a thief to help reclaim the city, his throne, and the princes whom he loves. This is a film that tries to show how power struggles worked in this community. It is something that people can learn from and gain valuable knowledge regarding the relevant community.

There is a possibility that mythology is underrated because it is not that easy to understand it. It raises all sorts of puzzling, fascinating and tough questions(Leeming 228). However, much can be learned by way of unearthing answers to the profound questions.
