Introduction of New Policies at the Workplace

Introduction of New Policies at the Workplace

Introduction

Introducing new policies can be challenging for any workplace given the likely resistance from the stakeholders involved. This is the same thing for the police department, more so since the stakeholders involved have different interests in this case. It is upon the relevant leadership to bring the people together to ensure that their interests are aligned. There are strategies that ought to be used for the different groups involved to ensure that there is success.

A). Presentation for the Diverse Groups

Those who Support Underprivileged Groups

This group is more concerned with policing strategies like racial profiling. The group will be interested in hearing how the police intend to make changes so that they can show the desired respect towards the underprivileged groups. The presentation here will be used to emphasize of how community policing strategies will be used to enhance open communication to everyone in the community regardless of their social or economic status. The police will intend to approach the underprivileged with positive and open positions while instigating the desire to share information.  Aggressive policing like racial profiling will not be used in community profiling given that community policing will be used as a tool to reduce the tension that exists between the community and the police.

Those Concerned with Rising Crime Rates

This group might have concerns regarding community policing given the rising crime rates. My presentation to this group will be based on the emphasis that the police department will ensure law enforcement has remained to be a priority at all times. Despite the implementation of community policing, the standards that come with law enforcement will be adhered to. The aspect of community policing only means that individuals breaching the law will be approached in a different way like using open communication first before shooting or arresting.

Those Concerned with Privacy and other Constitutional Rights

This group has unique concerns like how different strategies such as community policing violate people’s constitutional rights. It will be important to explain the different strategies being used by the police to help this group understand how they are implemented. When it comes to community policing, the group will be educated that community policing entails the creation of favorable communication between the community and the police, and is not intended to breach relevant constitutional rights. Most of the concerns from this group stem from the lack of understanding of how varied policing strategies work or having false misconceptions regarding issues at hand.

B). Facilitate Buy-In for the Proposal among Diverse Employees

Given the diversity of the workplace, there is likely to be resistance to change in light of the new policy. Employees do not like changes being made to the status quo due to the fear of the unknown. To ensure that employees buy-in to the community policing prospect, I would ensure that it has been integrated into the department’s mission and vision. This way it becomes an objective that the employees strive to achieve. Use of motivational leadership would be important in this case too since it will show employees the need for adopting this policy hence helping in ensuring open-mindedness. There is also the need of having a workplace environment that makes it possible for employees to make a contribution during the transition period. This makes them feel like part of the department hence increasing their probability of accepting the proposed changes. For employees’ involvement, they should be given the opportunity of voicing their ideas and opinions regarding how the implementation should move forward. The department should also have programs that deal with multicultural sensitivity to ensure that the diversity of the workplace does not affect the functioning of the police department.

C). How to Work with all Groups to Achieve a Workable Solution

The important thing here will be working in partnership. There is a need for participation for all the relevant stakeholders. This ensures that everyone feels valued hence the ability to listen to what other people are proposing. The aspect also gives an opportunity for development of numerous ideas given that different stakeholders are involved. The stakeholders have varying perceptions hence creating a favorable environment for coming up with a wide range of ideas. The best ideas will be chosen from the available list. All the roles, definition and procedures involved should be outlined clearly for everyone to understand. When people have a clear understanding of everything, it becomes possible for them to agree on real issues since misconceptions have been eliminated.

Conclusion

Working in partnership with all the stakeholders involved will be important to ensure that community policing works. The different groups will bring varied ideas that will be important while moving forward. Incorporation of ideas from different groups will also give everyone a sense of belonging hence motivate them to have the desire of seeing community policing succeed. However, it is important to approach each group in a way that is more appealing to that particular group. Using a universal approach to all the groups would only result in failure.
