Interview with Lori Best Regarding the Health Sector

Interview summary

I had a very good and interactive session with Lori Best where I had an opportunity to learn more about her dealings within the health sector. To start with, the interview reviewed that my peer is conversant with what is expected of him in the sector. It is evident that as a health team member, the main obligation is to save lives of the patients attending such facilities. In this case, Best has been improving the electronic medical record (EMR) and developing efficient work flows thus fulfilling his role as a team member in a health care team. It is also her role to be able to work with other members such as process engineer, managers, and clinical specialists just to mention a few. Best has also been providing leadership to other team members thus enabling success of different projects (Beshara, 2008).

From the interview, it has also dawned on us that professionalism is very essential in provision of health services. Different traits required by a professional have been outlined and are very important in ensuring efficiency in provision of health services. For instance, honesty, transparency, integrity, sincerity, trustworthiness and ability to do the right thing are among the essential traits outlined in the interview. Professionalism also requires one to be patient and listen to the views of others so as to move in the same direction. The interview has also asserted that professionalism has great influence in the work of health team players. This is realized by being able to work with others and be innovative and promote communication among the members.

The concept of leadership has also been discussed during the interview. Leaders in an organization can either be stewards or autocratic and these decisions are very instrumental to the success or failure of the organization. From the interviewee, it is clear that the leaders in this team provide steward leadership which has brought about significant changes over the years. The organizations objective, which has been patient care and improved outcomes, has been communicated to all stakeholders. It is also evident that the leadership of the health team has a shared vision with all the staff from the upper management to the unit staff level (Shea, 2002). The shared vision has enabled all the players to feel as part of the organizations’ success or failure.

The interview also outlined the importance of leadership to exercise professional advocacy and authenticity as well as power and influence while working with colleagues. According to the interviewee, this is important since it shows their willingness to help others without expecting anything in return. Use of power by leaders is also important if used for the overall success of the organization. Leaders are vested with powers which should be used appropriately to ensure health services are offered accordingly. Leadership is also expected to influence others in order to act respectively, effectively and provide growth opportunity within the organization.

Positive influence by leaders has been a critical aspect since it enables team members to effect new changes and development within an organization. The interview has also discussed the dangers of leaders who use their power and influence for their selfish gains. Such acts are classified as unprofessional and should be treated with contempt (Shea, 2002). From the interview, it is clear that the interviewee is knowledgeable people whose skills and knowledge can only be ignored at one’s own peril.
