Inappropriate use of social platforms may lead to criminal fines or even imprisonment in the nursing field. Federal laws seek to safeguard the privacy of patients. Such improper activities could also result in defamation and harassment which is illegal. A nurse may, for instance, posted confidential information on the social media platforms may be hoping to raise awareness of a certain condition. She viewed this move as helpful in a limited way, but it was, in fact, misconduct. The nurse did not realize that other unintended people could access once posted content intended to a single recipient online.

Even if the nurse deleted such a post, it could still be recovered by any web administrator. Such content could be sued in a court of law. Disclosure of confidential information breaches, not just professional conduct but also the nurse is liable for the damages to the patient.
