“I carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart)” by E.E. CUMMINGS

The poem I identify with most is “i carry your heart with me (i carry it in my heart)” by E.E. CUMMINGS. The poem is about true love which is a situation where people in love always think about each other, cherish each other and always loves each other no matter the distance. It seems like Cummings wrote this poem from his heart and I really love it.

There are some elements of poetry present in this poem. One of the elements in this poem is symbolism. Cummings figuratively speaks about carrying a person’s heart.  It is not possible to go around carrying a person’s heart. Cummings uses this to symbolise love. Cummings wrote “i carry your heart with me” (1).

Another element is paradoxes. Cummings is fond of using words in a way that changes their meaning. An example is “whatever is done by only me is your doing, my darling” (3-4). If it is only done by me, how can it then be somebody else doing? Cummings uses line syntax to flip the meaning of words. Another example is “i fear no fate(for you are my fate, my sweet)” (5-6). I fear ideally means there is fear but the way Cummings has used it, it ends up meaning something else.

Another element is imagery. Imagery is the use of figurative language to help the reader visualize a moment.  Cummings wrote “and whatever a sun will always sing is you” (9). I think the bright sun is being compared with the personality of his lover. This is also the element of personification since the sun cannot sing.
