Homework for Business

It is essential for a leader to have a leadership development plan. The plan helps the leader to steer their careers towards advanced roles of leadership and the higher management positions. The goal that I would set first of all as a leader is to have strategic thinking where my ability to see the bigger picture would improve. This would ensure that I take broader business perspectives.

The first step in developing the leadership development plan is to be able to define the components of a great leader. The action involves drawing inspiration the leaders of today hence identifying the competencies, abilities, traits, and experiences of those leaders (Alter, 2017). Some of the things that should be included in the list of who a good leader is are ethical behavior, ability to succinctly and communicate a vision. The next step in the leadership plan is taking an assessment of oneself. Here, a person can identify their essential characteristics. By breaking down ones personality traits and strengths, one gets more insight into their style and can improve their strategic thinking.

The next step in the plan is to write a personal vision statement. According to Alter (2017), the personal statement shows the core values and the personal traits of a person. By outlining the vision which involves strategic thinking, a person has something to look back on in terms of developing their goals. After writing the personal vision statement, one is expected to the current skills that they have and the ones that they do not have. Reflecting on the skills that one has is crucial to developing the next stage which issettingthe goals.

Setting goals is a vital stage in the leadership development plan. One has to set goals that are Specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. After setting the goals, it is now time for the individual to write down an action plan that is meant to aid in achieving the goals. The goals should be arranged according to their importance (Alter, 2017).

The path-goal theory is mostly based on the identification of the worker and the surroundings to achieve a goal. The goal of the method is to increase the motivation of the employees, their empowerment and their satisfaction to become productive individuals in the company (Hirt, 2016). The path-goal theory is aligned with the selected leadership development plan. The theory of leadership follows some steps. The first step is to determine the environment and employee characteristics. The second step is the selection of the leadership style while the last step is focusing on the factors that are likely to influence the success of the employee. Just as the plans call for the leader to identify their characteristics, the leader in the path-goal theory is expected to adjust their style of leadership and behavior to fit with the employees.
