Health Benefits of Alcohol Consumption

In a research study titled ‘Drinking to Your Health,’ Doctor Arthur L. Klatsky argues that research shows that light drinking can have overall health benefits. According to Klatsky’s research, people who consume at least two drinks daily are less likely to develop diseases. Doctors Klatsky asserts that light to moderate drinkers have a reduced rate of developing coronary heart disease, acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), ischemic stroke, diabetes mellitus, and other conditions. Klatsky, however, argues that age is not a factor when it comes to alcohol reducing death rates. Finally, Klatsky says that the choice of drink may also be a factor when it comes to disease prevention. For example, he says that wine drinkers have more visible results of resisting diseases. He adds that small amounts of alcohol, taken moderately with food have the best relation to health (Klatsky, 2003). The relationship is however less likely with spirits and hard drinks. The study concludes by asserting that light to moderate consumption of alcohol daily has positive relations with general good health and decreases mortality rates.

Another study by Artero, Artero, Tarín, and Cano (2015) agrees with Dr. Klatsky’s findings.  The study, however, focused only on wine consumption and ignored other alcoholic drinks such as beer and spirits.  The authors say that wine has a complex composition that has general health benefits to light and moderate consumers (Artero et al., 2015). Wine contains Resveratrol which is a non-flavonoid compound and quercetin which is a flavonol. The authors contend that these compounds have universal benefits when it comes to reducing the occurrence of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and neurological diseases. These findings, however, show no relation when it came to cancer. The authors, therefore, concluded that balancing moderate consumption of wine, therefore, seems to be beneficial in terms of health.
