Describe your greatest professional or academic achievement and how you added value to your organization or your college.
Prior to depicting my most notable and proudest professional achievement, please allow me first to provide you with my brief background information. My name is XXX and I was born in Mexico City in 1983, I was raised in a small, economically depressed village until after my eighth birthday. During my upbringing, my father always instilled in me the importance of education. He knew very well that in order for his children to be successful he needed to set them up for success and place them in a position where we would be afforded the opportunity to succeed. It is on this premises that my family set out to move to the United States of America, where in our own thinking was a land of freedom and opportunities. Upon arrival, my family quickly realized that although this is the land of opportunities, nothing comes on silver Plata and hence one had to be focused and work hard to achieve their ambitions.
Firstly, I have to say that my professional achievements have all been an accumulation of small goals built on one another. However, all of my achievements started with one idea that my father instilled in me. It is prudent to note that he primary objective of our coming to the United States was to satisfy my ambitions for academic excellence. I am grateful because I was afforded the opportunity to pursue my dreams and as a result I was the first person in my family to graduate High School, the first person to graduate College, and I hope that I will also be the first to one day graduate from Graduate School. Although most of my friends and family do not understand my ambitions, I am very clear in my conscience that I will make a difference and their doubts will only serve as a motivation to press through. Today, I have to admit that my greatest professional achievement is to have received a Federal Commission from the President of the United States and be appointed as an Officer in the United States Army in December of 2015. I embarked on this journey fourteen years ago when I made the decision to join the Military after the attacks on 11 September 2001 occurred. I knew right away that I wanted to serve my country after the entire country felt the aftermath of the attacks on liberty and our every day of life. This was the culmination of my military career that I embarked upon in February 2012. I decided to join the military immediately after the attacks on September 2001; I wanted to serve the great nation that gave me so much already. Watching the towers fall was the pivotal moment in my life that catapulted me to serve a higher cause. Since then, I have served honorably in the Military for over 14 years and have been deployed overseas twice. Being in the military has taught me a number of invaluable lessons in life; leadership, and the importance of following your dreams are the most notable lessons from my career in the military. Having served as an enlisted Soldier gave me an inside perspective on meaning of team work, on the meaning of taking care of the men on your left and on your right. The fourteen years I spent in the Army cultivated a deep-seated passion for serving society. While in the Army, I had the great honor to serve with several men and women who, like me, fought to make a difference in the world. I reached the rank of Sergeant First Class, and was considered a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer, and although I was very successful in the enlisted side, I felt that my potential had not been reached and I decided to further develop myself and made the decision to become an Officer.
However, before being able to become an Officer I knew that I needed to embark on the road towards higher education. It is a requirement for Officers to have a degree and I knew right away that I needed to fulfill this goal. Through perseverance and determination, I was able to graduate from Thomas State University with a 3.8 GPA. I was also inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society and awarded the Arnold Fletcher Award, an award given to students that reflect exceptional achievement in self-directed learning. It was an overwhelming feeling of happiness and achievement being able to stand in front of my family as a University Graduate, my dream finally came true. Reflecting on my upbringing I never imagined that this would be possible, especially because I came from a very poor immigrant with no formal education.
Through this achievement, I was able to further advance in my organization and was able to bring the knowledge I harnessed as a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer into the new position. Having the qualifications required to fill a vacancy as a Junior Officer, I was able to help my organization fill a void that required a mid-level officer thus resulting in saving the organization thousands of dollars. Most importantly, I now have the capability to provide direct leadership to Soldiers by providing them with purpose, direction, and motivation while still operating to accomplish the mission and improve the organization.
