It is true that men and women have different gender roles in Germany (Chatillon, Charles & Bradley, 2018). For instance, gender differences are seen in the place of work, family life, food, communication, upbringing, and lifestyle. The issue of gender roles is not unique to the German people. It is an issue that differs depending on the culture of people in different parts of the world. The gender roles are dictated by the culture and tradition of the people. Therefore, this paper discusses the gender differences in German culture especially in the aspects of communication, food, lifestyle, upbringing and family life.
Gender communication in Germany
It is important to know that women in Germany are more open in their communication as compared to men(Chatillon, Charles & Bradley, 2018). For instance, it is easy for women to quickly express their range of emotions like anger, sadness, curiosity, happiness and depression as compared to men who prefer to remain close as well as personal on such issues. The German men do not appreciate openness in the process of communication even though the German people are honest, truthful and very direct in their conversion.
On the other hand, the German women prefer to express their feelings of closeness to another person by touching such people during conversations while men do not replicate this gesture(Chatillon, Charles & Bradley, 2018). It is also important to realize the German women prefer to disclose and also share stories about their personal lives which the people that they feel closer to but in most cases men never do the same for their own lives. It is also confirmed that the German women would go to a great extent on the issues of honesty which much levels of tolerance and this component gets reflected in the way the women communicate while the German men are more passionate in their communication.
Food
The German men like to eat a lot of beer while women, on the other hand, prefer to eat sausages(Chatillon, Charles & Bradley, 2018). This is an aspect that has got nothing to do with stereotyping because it is the truth. The German man would consume almost 140 liters of beer annually. However, it is also important to note that since women love to eat a lot of sausages, it forms the most critical component of German cuisine. The sausages are usually made from the pork as well as beef, but they are flavored differently.
Family life
The element of family in gender is the most exciting part in almost all cultures around the world(Chatillon, Charles & Bradley, 2018). The Germans are not left behind. For instance, it is important to realize that in most cases men are the head of families and are expected to provide for their families. On the other hand, women are supposed to stay at home and care for the children. This type of arrangement in the German cultural set up seems to be dying with the new social rights movement groups such as the MEETOO and the feminists’ groupings. But the mark of gender roles concerning family life is still visible in Germany.
Upbringing and lifestyle
The upbringing of both men and women according to gender is also unique. Both the young men and women are given sex education at a younger age(Chatillon, Charles & Bradley, 2018). The parents are stricter with the female children as compared to their male counterparts. The belief is that females are somewhat disadvantaged as compared to males. However, it is also important that it all depends on which part of Germany because most of the cosmopolitan places do not hold to the gender roles. New lifestyles are coming up in Germany and in most of the cases the men and women are viewed equally in all aspects of the society.
