Introduction

The term gay was initially used in explaining “carefree,” or “bright and showy” feelings. However, the term received great importance in the onset of the 20^th century where it was used in defining individuals that are attracted to those of similar gender. Therefore, gay refers to a term given to individuals that exercise homosexuality.  Generally, “Gay” was a term that only applied to male homosexuals. However, this has changed with time as the term can now be used for both genders, “males and females.” Inother words, heterosexuality and bisexuality are the main categories used in describing sexual orientation. On the other hand, “Straight” is a common slang used in referring to heterosexuals. This slang is applied for people whose sexual orientation is for people of the opposite sex. In other words, straight individuals do not get attracted to people of the same gender as the gays do. Research shows that the majority of the people are straight in the sense that couples consist of male and female partners. However, it is also possible for heterosexuals to get attracted to the same gender. In this essay, I will argue for straight individuals.

Discrimination

According to the Kinsey scale of zero to six, sex researchers describe or rather explain sexual preferences as a continuum. Heterosexual or straight individuals fall at zero level on the scale while their counterparts, gays, falling at six. This implies that the individuals at zero to 3 level have affection desires with relationships with opposite genders but at the same time can experience attraction to partners of the same sex. Being gay can limit a person from being involved in many things that make life or relationships interesting. For instance, straight individuals are freely invited to family or any given event. Nothing is questionable in such a relationship as people perceive it as normal. However, for gays, no one wants to be associated with them since the relationship is considered ill to some extent. The family to the gay couples in most cases wants to keep a distance to avoid prejudice from society. It is for this reason that most gay individuals do not feel free to reveal their genders in fear of discrimination. Despite the stringent laws that have been put in place to protect LGBT rights, it is still hard for these people to be accepted. This is different from the straight or heterosexual people who do not face any discrimination given the fact that 99% of the people in the world fall in this category.

Family

When it comes to family, straight couples are in a better position to get children and start living together as a family. A family is made up of a father, mother and children, a case for the heterosexuals. A woman is in a position to get pregnant and give birth to children who can perpetuate the family lineage. This is however difficult for gay individuals. It is a fact that for children to be in the picture, there must exist two individuals of the opposite sex. However, in the situation for the gays, both the couples are of the same sex, an issue that makes it hard for them to get children of their own. But if it is a must for them to have a family, then most of them embark on adopting to feel as complete as their straight counterparts. This, of course, makes the couple happy and feel complete but the truth is that their bloodline is lost and there is no real heir in their lineage. According to a study carried out in the US on the LGBT community, it was evident that these individuals faced discrimination on the ground that they interfered with the “productive life” as well as negatively impacted on life in general. In this case, the pressure to have a family like other couples is an escape from oppression, isolation, and stigma from the community.

Legalization

Every individual holds a significant level of respect for straight marriages all around the globe. In other words, when it comes to marriage, straight people are supported by not only the church but the laws of the land as well since the union is perceived holy in the eyes of manand God. It is for this reason that churches feel free to officiate such marriages where blessings are declared as well as a happy ending where each is to be fruitful. Furthermore, everyone would want to associate with these married couples and their children afterwards. However, the case is different from their counterparts. Their relationship is in most cases hidden with less or no person offering support for the marriage. Despite the fact that many countries have begun legalizing gay marriages, the issue is still not fully accepted by society as this is perceived as an act going against the values and norms of the community. In other words, gay individuals have limited chances to enjoy their marriages like the straight individuals do, a more reason why I am in support of heterosexuality.

Clothing assimilation

Clothing on any event for straight couples is not a big deal. In fact, it is fun since having matching outfits is considered romantic and is admired by almost every single, dating and married individual. For instance, these individuals enjoy shared interests in hiking clothes, surf wear, or even G star Raw. When the couples walk around, nobody looks at them with the suspicious eye or comments on their matching outfits. However, this is not the same for gay couples. Being seen together in similar outfits leaves people raising eyebrows. The freedom for them to walk around is transformed into a mockery a more reason why most of them adapt to the yin yang style when walking out. In other words, a gay couple has limited freedom and cannot enjoy doing little things such as strolling the way straight couples do.

Body envy

Straight individuals have a relationship with the opposite partners which have different physiques. There is also a distinction of hobbies between the couples which makes them enjoy trying out new things that make life worthwhile. However, gay individuals have common body features which makes them feel jealous of the shape of their partners’ hands or legs or fingers.

Conclusion

Not only in the US society but the world as a whole, a hetero-normative order is maintained in the sense that practices that are not in range with heterosexuality are in most cases stigmatized. In other words, individuals who do not conform to the values of society tend to face oppression as well as marginalization by the heterosexual people. In this case, as much as gay individuals may have reasons for their sexual preference, it is still evident that they are vulnerable to discrimination as opposed to straight individuals. The world is ¾ full of heterosexual people, who are respected and have the freedom as well as privileges to enjoy every aspect of life without discrimination. In this case, as much as I have argued for straight individuals, it is vital that gays should also be considered normal members of the society who should be accepted and respected. By so doing, there will exist a society of equal rights for the people regardless of their sexual choices.
