From the Solomon Islands to Liberia: These are the 25 poorest countries in the world

The article lists the 25 poorest nations in the world based on Gross National Income (GNI), Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and life expectancy at birth.  The author chose to use GNI and GDP because the latter does not account for the wealth generated by a country. GNI is an accurate indicator of a nation’s wealth because it captures all economic activities with a country’s border and wealth created by national owned enterprises (Harrington par. 2).  The author reviewed data from the World Bank and International Monetary funds such as GNI, GDP, population, and life expectancy. Most of these developing nations are located in the sub-Saharan region, are land-locked, and depend on agriculture, which is negatively affected by desertification. Most of the countries have GNI and GDP of below $ 2000 and $ 100 billion respectively.

The article is related to the topic ‘Why are some nations poor and rich,’ because it captures some of the aspects that make some countries poor. According to the article, some nations are poor because of dependence on a single economic sector which faces difficulties from extreme environmental conditions. For example, countries such as Mali (GDP of $ 41 billion), Burkina Faso (GDP of $ 35.89 billion), and Niger (GDP of $21.39) are landlocked and located in the sub-Saharan region where desertification is a menace and negatively affected agriculture (Harrington par. 4 and 5). These countries depend on Agriculture as the primary source of income, yet the sector is not doing that well to sustain the economy adequately. Other factors that make these countries poo include corruption, political instability, and lack of trade ties. For example, Mali does not have enough exports and the state only exports labor to Europe.
