Evidence-based guidelines refer to the problem-solving platform that enhances effective care to patients; a key aspect in providing quality care to patients (Bhaumik, 2017).These guidelines arederived from systematic literature reviews, and they serve to offer both the provider and the client with evidence which is appropriatefor use in physical therapy (Geurden, 2014). These guidelines help the practitioner or the healthcare provider and also the patient to make decisions on the appropriate health care for a specific circumstance. However, the health care provideris responsiblefor the determination of the feasibility of the evidence from the protocol on the particular patient depending on the patient’s circumstance(Geurden, 2014).Some examples of evidence-based guidelines include Intravenous Catheter Size and Blood Administration (ICSBA), infection control, non-invasive measuring of blood pressure in children, use of oxygen in COPD patients(Bhaumik, 2017).
In ICSBA the health provider is advised to use a smaller-gauge catheter, which provides the comfortability of the patient. In the case of infection control, nurses carry out a crucial role in the prevention of an illness before it occurs. This includes keeping the environment of the hospital clean, putting on personal protective clothing and others. On the other hand, in the non-invasive measuring of blood pressure in children, nurses are advised to measure blood pressure according to evidence-based guidelines practice since correct measurements are a crucial part of effective treatment(Bhaumik, 2017). In this case, it is done by the auscultatory method after which the results are compared against those from the oscillometric method(Bhaumik, 2017). In COPD patients, the guideline requires that the patients be provided with oxygen to prevent hypoxia or even organ failure and this, in turn, enhances the patients’ quality of life and can live longer.
As observed from the above procedures, the recommendations the health providers give to their clients in evidence-based guidelines are supported by a statement explaining the procedures and backed up by systematic research and an evaluation on the same. Having all this in one place has improved the quality of health care in wrecent times. It is therefore advisable for health care providers and agencies to adopt these type lifesaving guidelines.
