Introduction
Alcoholism is one of the major issues affecting the society today. Most of the young people in the modern generation always engage in drinking for various justifications. Also most of the people trapped in the drinking behavior are there unwillingly as efforts to stop the vice have been fruitless. Majority of people have tried to quit drinking after they realize that there are no benefits in the vice but in vain. As a result, I have found it necessary to research on how recovering alcoholics resist or give into temptation. It is an important topic for research since the number of alcoholics in the society is substantial and a great number of them are striving to stop drinking in vain. Also, it is prudent to note that this group of people includes students who find it difficult to quit drinking and has consequently affected their academic performance adversely. The temptations are too hard for them to resist and if the drinking trend continues, then it will be difficult to have a sober community. In essence, alcoholism is a great social challenge that has brought about numerous health and other social challenges.
Discussion
I hope to conduct a fruitful research that will help improve the alcoholism problem in the society. Having interacted with this group of people for a long time, I think I will be able to conduct a fruitful research. It is nevertheless imperative to note that I will conduct the research as a ‘’halfie’’ like Abu-Lughod since I am not a native anthropologist. This should however not be a concern and will not by any way affect the results of the research process. I am very friendly to the people trapped in alcoholism, and I am usually interacting with them although I am not a victim of alcoholism. In most cases, during weekends and holidays, I am always interacting with these people, and I always sympathize with their situation. A good number of them will always narrate to me how they got engaged and how difficult it is to get out of this habit. My continuous interaction with victims of alcoholism makes me identify myself with the group as a good number of them in my surroundings are my friends. This will help me be objective in the course of the research and not take an activist stance as was the case with Robin Sheriff and Seth Holmes.
My research process will be an interactive session by the victims of alcoholism who have found it difficult to quit drinking. As aforementioned, I am always interacting with victims of alcoholism during my free time. It is, therefore, essential to point out that hanging out with these people will be my basis for my research. Just like Khosravi did, I will hang out in the public places where I will freely interact with these people. As I hang out with them, I will tend to interrogate them and find out the challenges they face in resisting alcoholism. You can only know a group of people well through full interaction, and I will ensure that I am as close to them as before. I will, however, try to gather information from multiple sites and hence I will be required to meet different population from different places. This research approach could, therefore, be a mixture of Khosravi and Holmes.
In this case, Khosravi’s approach is similar to my research. The work of Khosravi involved understanding the illegal immigrants through first hand information by being an ‘’illegal’’ traveler himself. This is the same approach I intend to use in my research work. Although it will not be exactly similar to Khosravi, the only difference will be that I will not engage in the actual drinking to get the first hand experience like it was the case with Khosravi. I understand the challenges these people go through and I would be foolish to engage in alcoholism for research purpose. Nevertheless, the interaction and hanging out with victims of alcoholism will be similar to the experience Khosravi gained through interaction with the immigrants. Through the interaction, I will be able to associate with the victims and hence I will be able to understand what they go through and how to improve the situation. The experience will give first hand information will in further exploration on the concept. It will be instrumental in identifying the urge and how best the society can deal with the issue.
On the same note, it is noteworthy to understand that my research approach will also have similarities to the work of Seth Holmes. For instance, I will interact with different populations just like it was the case with Seth Holmes. Holmes interacted and travelled with immigrants in the quest to understand their suffering. The approach is instrumental since it helps get the first-hand information that is instrumental in having further understanding of the issue at hand. The same way he interacted with immigrants is similar to the way I will interact with the victims of alcoholism on a daily basis to understand what they go through and the efforts they make. Also, my approach will involve different populations just like Holmes did his research. By involving different population, the research will be more objective and will give a broader perspective on the concept. It is, however, essential to note that the research process will not take a long time like it was the case with Holmes and this makes the difference.
