It is essential for programs that receive federal funds to practice client confidentiality. The Federal regulations forbid programs from disclosing any information that identifies the patient. The laws recommend programs to follow the following ethical guidelines. Programs should not send a letter to the patient indicating that the addressee may be a patient. Healthcare facilities should not allow a receptionist to confirm to the family member or any other visitor that the person attending the program is a patient (University of California Los Angeles, n.d). Also, the programs should not fax the information identifying the patient to a wrong fax number. Moreover, the programs should not disclose descriptive materials that might infer the patient’s identity. For example, they should practice ethically by not referring to the patient as the Senator’s son. The programs should not allow the police to access the patient’s records when they come with the search warrant but without a valid court order (University of California Los Angeles, n.d). The programs should first protest since it is their right. Ultimately, the other ethical consideration is that they should be keen with the telephone messages that might reveal the patient’s status to his/her roommate or any other person.
