Wit, produced by Mike Nichols presents a striking experience of intelligence and heartbreak. It follows Vivian’s life after she is diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer, as she tries to filter the suffering, humiliation of hospital routines, and loss of self-respect through what she loves most, poetry. This movie presents both an intelligent and anti-intelligent outlook on not only the rigor of life (trying to do important things) but also the value of actually living. It touches on a myriad of themes including ethics in rigorous medical research and practice, nursing, literature, life, death, and self-respect among others.
There is a particular rigor in the way many of the characters portrayed in the movie approach their lives. The medical researchers, Dr. Kelekian, and Dr. Jason, get the patient to agree to debilitating and aggressive chemotherapy to further their research in commitment to their discipline; Vivian herself is highly focused on her scholar life to an extent of having little to no personal life with being unmarried, no children, and even no visitors. However, as she begins to succumb to the disease, Vivian is showed desiring that human connection that she thought was not important in her life, the kind of life that is embodied by Professor Ashford, who illustrates not the importance of life, but how to properly live it. She is a renowned scholar in her field, but she has a family, and is visiting her five year old grandson. Another is Susie, who can handle confrontation, while still maintaining her emotional core.
In the end, Wit becomes about more than life and death. It shows the value of balancing living and professionalism. When rigor is separated from the truths of life, it becomes mere wit. one must take living life to the fullest seriously, that is pursue important things such as careers, or scholarly goals seriously but at the same time, take time to pursue life from deep in the heart.
