Discovering Strengths in Leadership

Leaders have the role in influencing followers so that they can produce desired results. In the Present world, leaders should not depend on their failures to appraise their skills; instead, they should engage in a continuous and diligent evaluation of those skills. Therefore, leaders should know their strengths to have an influence on their people. Leaders become successful if they have the ability to influence people (Northouse, 2014). By understanding their strengths, leaders become more effective since they understand what they are good at doing. Second, it is important for leaders to know their strengths so that they can improve their people skills. According to Northouse (2014), a person can lead based on their ability to solve problems, but long-term achievements depend on their interaction and relationship with the people. Third, leaders should know their strengths to determine whether they have positive attitude and outlook. Leaders with negative attitude and outlook always diminish their potential. Therefore, it is significant to remain positive to gain an advantage.

I think that it is significant for leaders to focus more on their strengths. Strengths are things that leaders already know, and they are good at doing. Therefore, it is better for them to focus more on their strengths since it would not require them to invest too much time and resources. Citing Northouse (2014), by focusing on their strengths, leaders would be searching for opportunities instead of problems. Conversely, by focusing on weak points, leaders would be decreasing their self-confidence and overall performance. Moreover, leaders do not achieve much by trying to fix their weaknesses. However, focusing on one’s weaknesses is significant for personal growth. Therefore, leaders should not spend equal time to understand their weak points.
