The theme of heteronormativity is evident in both Dirty Dancing film of 1987 and How She Move film of 2007.  The Dirty Dancing movie is all about a teenage girl known as Baby.  As she transits to adulthood, she grows up through her relationship with Johnny, which makes the movie to be a dance, romance movie. How she Move is a film about a young girl, Rayanna who is determined to learn step dance. Heteronormativity is the assumption that people fall into two distinct and complementary genders that is female and male with an integral role in life. It believes that heterosexuality or default sexual orientation is the order of life and that marital and sexual relations are merely fitting between individuals of opposite sex.

In Dirty Dancing film, Baby falls in love with Johnny Castle, the dancing pro in the hotel’s shows, and this is what society expects, heterosexual relationships.  Most of the relationships in the movie are heterosexual.  However, there some forms of dances that are gender specific.  How she Move film is all about an aspiring medical student, who drop out of school because of financial challenges. Her sister dies due to a drug overdose. She is compelled to relocate to the crime-prone community where she grew as a child.  She enters a step dancing completion with hope to win the $50,000 prize. She is in urgent need of money for her education.

Ray, a young teenage girl, uses her interesting moves to earn a coveted slot in Bishop’s dabbing crew, which is dominated by males. Because of gender, she is isolated from males’ dancers and again from local females because of jealousy. The film portrays that heteronormativity can only be ended by persistent struggle. It is believed that the men team can dance and earn much money in competition than females and this makes Raya have a difficult time trying to convince Bishop to allow her to join his crew. Mixed gender team are deemed as an unserious, gimmick, and do not win the contest.

Both the two movies also depict discrimination at different levels. The video, Dirty Dancing, social segregation is evident. The hotel has hired dancers from humble backgrounds to entertain guests from the wealthy class.  Baby is from a rich class family and her affairs with the best-looking dancer, John Castle; is vehemently opposed by the family just because Johnny is from a poor background. Often, the wealthy class women who come in the show harass Johnny. The hotel has hired low-class dancers to entertain rich fellows, and this portrays social status discrimination during the period. The relationship between Baby and low-class Johnny shows different perception, but this relationship is facing opposition since it is against the social norms that divided people into classes.

There is an abuse of power in both movies. In Dancing Dirty, Max Kellerman the owner of the hotel mistreats his dancers. He never gives them a hearing and accepts any accusation put forward against them by the wealthy guests visiting the hotel. Johny is wrongly accused of stealing a woman’s husband wallet. Kellerman decides to fire Johny without investigating the matter further to seek the truth. Even when Baby comes to Johny defense by proving that,the night he was accused of stealing the wallet Johny was with her in the cabin the whole night.
