In my opinion, I do not think there is a single way of describing a good leader. I think to assess a good leader would entail analyzing several characteristics that are inherent with effective leaders. Among the characteristics that a good leader manifests there is self-confidence. This is a great characteristic since it demonstrates to the employees that one has an idea of what they are doing. The employees will easily do what is requested of them since they believe it is the right thing given the confidence of the leader. When a leader does not demonstrate self-confidence, it casts doubt on the side of employees, and they become resistance on some directives as a result. Another characteristic of a good leader is being decisive. Once a leader has made up his/her mind, they should not hesitate to commit. There is the need of showing consistency with the decisions and not backing out unless it is absolutely necessary. Decisiveness is a characteristic that shows commitment. A good leader is also expected to be passionate about what they do. It is inspirational to see someone that cares about what they do. It is easy to transmit such passion to junior employees hence making them more effective since they are doing what the leader is doing. Having great communication skills also works to showcase an aspect of a good leader. Effective communication is important to ensure that an individual passes on the intended information. One might be aware of what they want in their head, but when communicating with others they make them understand something different. That is why it is important to have the necessary communication skills to ensure there is no communication barrier. The above points are just a few examples of the characteristics that good leaders ought to uphold, as they are numerous.
While reading an article on Forbes, I came to learn of Dan Price, and I considered him to be an excellent leader. Dan Price brought controversy to the business world when he raised the company’s (Gravity Payments) annual minimum wage to $70,000. To help fund this initiative, Price slashed his own seven-figure wages to $70,000. This was an act of a leader that demonstrates selflessness since it is very few leaders that can do this; if at all they exist. Price stood by his decision despite being sued by his brother who was a silent partner regarding the issue. This shows that Price has respect for his team members and is taking an initiative to ensure they are leading a better life. There was an assumption that this would help them to work extra hard to repay the good faith of their CEO. This initiative has been positive to the company since it was able to increase its revenues and retain its best employees given the employees’ turnover declined significantly.
