Three factors that determine the proportion of defective glass shells produced by a company include temperature, humidity, and artisan expertise. A quantitative study uses historical data to establish the correlation between the three independent variables and the response variables (percentage of defective glass shells). Linear regression model can be used to develop the relations between predictor and dependent variables. The analysis of previously existing data can assist in answering the research questions. Both simple linear and multiple regression can assist in establishing correlation. Simple linear regression involves one dependent variable (temperature, humidity or expertise) and the outcome variable (defective glass). Multiple linear regression establish the effect of all the three independent variables (temperature, humidity, and expertise) on the outcome variables (defective glass)(Cooper & Schindler, 2013). The outcome of the study can assist the decision makers in recommending the appropriate corrective measures for the lighting company.
Data Analysis
Data analysis entails cleaning, transforming and manipulating data with the aim of gaining insight that can play a crucial role in informing decision making in a company. The first step involved in research is defining the research problem, and hypothesis followed the collection of data. Data can be either primary or secondary. The collection of primary data entirely involves since it involves fieldwork. Working with primary data tends to be challenging since they are raw and needs to be refined to facilitate analysis. In this case, the study will rely on secondary data, which is readily available. The collection of secondary data entails extraction of data from databases or various sources. The data should be checked and cleaned for subsequent analysis. Descriptive and inferential statistics assist in exploring the data and showing the relationship between the variables. Descriptive statistics describe the data regarding measures of central tendency such as mean, median and standard deviations. An inferential statistic such as linear regression is crucial in establishing whether there is a statistically significant relationship between the variables. The outcome of the analysis can be presented visually to the decision makers using graphs and plots to help them in making decisions that would of great benefit to the company (Cooper & Schindler, 2013).
Research studies have shown that most defects occur when temperature and humidity are not adequately controlled. Optimum temperature and humidity is critical in ensuring the efficient production of glass units (Welch et al., 2013). A novice would not know the optimum conditions required for the production of glass. As a result, there would be more defects when a novice is controlling the manufacturing unit. The level of expertise determines the number of defective units. A more experienced worker knows how to manipulate temperature and humidity to obtain the desired outcome. There are several reasons why uncontrolled temperature and humidity causes defects. Shrinkage can occur due to different thermal expansions of glass materials during the formation and cooling stage. Other factors include the effect of stress relaxation on the molding process and uneven cooling speeds that make the complex form deviates from the desired geometry. Temperature and humidity are critical factors that affect the manufacturing of glass units. The level of expertise also affects the quality of glass units since it plays a crucial role in maintaining a controlled environment in a manufacturing plant(Dambon, Wang, & Klocke, 2009).
Biblical Perspective
The company may find it difficult to decide for fear of making the wrong choices. The company should focus on controlling its manufacturing conditions by ensuring that an expert controls the process and that quality control checks are there to ascertain optimum temperature and humidity during the manufacturing process. The company should not continue without bringing change to its manufacturing process since it will continue to make losses due to defective glass. The Bible, in Proverbs 16:3, asserts that man must commit to his work for his plan to be established (Publishers, 2011). Therefore, the company should commit to making the necessary changes to succeed.
