Managers in organizations are faced with lots of decisions that require to be made every day. While making wrong decisions may lead to the acquisition of valuable knowledge, the best business leaders endeavor to make the right decisions to solve an existing problem. Commercial heads use four primary personal decision-making strategies in their companies.
The first decision-making method that managers can use is called directive. Directive decision makers rely on their expertise and rationale and do not take advice from anyone else (Malhotra). The significant advantage of this style is that decision-making is quick. Managers are however advised not to make impulsive decisions.
The second decision-making approach is referred to as analytic. Analytic leaders consider a lot of information and consult others before making a decision. Although these leaders are adaptable to a variety of opinions, they significantly control the process of decision-making (Malhotra). One of the disadvantages of this approach is that it is time-consuming. Analytic leaders can deliver even under challenging situations.
The third tactic is known as conceptual. Conceptual decision-makers permit creative thinking and consider a wide range of opinions. These leaders are futuristic in making decisions and are achievement-oriented(Malhotra). Conceptual managers are risk takers and preferred for young companies.
The fourth style is called behavioral. Individuals who employ this technique in decision-making, aim to create a conflict-free environment for workers and to ensure that the interpersonal relationships among employees are good (Malhotra). These leaders prefer working with a team and are convincing. Behavioral leaders are the best when a company needs a peaceful coexistence of workers and a conducive working environment.
Biased managers make poor decisions. By definition, bias refers to unfairly supporting or opposing something or someone. Several preferences frequently make leaders to make bad choices.
The first bias is groupthink bias. This type of bias involves favoring individuals one is similar to while excluding the others. Incompetent managers may decide to fire an employee by this bias.
The second bias is gender bias. At workplaces, leaders are inclined to rank male candidates above their female counterparts, especially in scientific fields. This bias could misinform a human resource manager to promote a less qualified male to a higher technological department position when there are more qualified females.
Proficient leaders can devise innovative methods of making decisions during eventualities. Although there are a variety of creative practices that managers could employ in decision-making, it is advisable to use the most suitable approach for a particular situation. The best technique gives excellent results.
One of the innovative techniques that managers can use in making decisions is reflexive. This technique entails making fast decisions without considering other options. Managers who use this method are decisive and avoid procrastination. Decisions made using this method cause wastage of resources. The reflexive style is suitable during emergencies.
Consistent style is the other form of innovative approach that managers can use in the process of decision-making. Bosses who use this style do not rush or delay in deciding what to do in the event a challenge faces them. This technique relies on adequate information and alternatives to make decisions, and decision-makers have a well-developed decision-making model that they adhere to when making decisions. Big companies such as Google and Facebook use the consistent style in making their decisions.
To conclude, the four personal decision-making styles used by managers are directive, analytic, conceptual, and behavioral. Groupthink and gender biases make managers make bad decisions. Reflexive and consistent are the two innovative techniques that leaders can use to make decisions.
