Neda Agha-Soltan was an Iranian female who was shot in the chest by a sniper in the aftermath of the Iranian election protests. Neda was studying philosophy, and by the time of her death, she was in the company of her music teacher inside the car(ThisIsForNeda, 2010). Several primary sources were used to tell the story concerning her death. One of the primary sources were the videos which were recorded immediately after the incident of her before she took her last breath. The second primary source to the story was that of the bystanders who stood as the eyewitnesses to the killing of Neda Agha-Soltan.
Reflection from Neda Agha-Soltan’s death
To a person who might not have a piece of in-depth knowledge about Iran, this story can offer the most useful explanation to them and make them understand the situation better. One of the things they can understand is that Iran is a country in crisis and the citizens there have no freedom to express their democracy. On a personal level, I was able to learn a lot about Iran from the video. One thing is that in Iran as a foreign journalist it is almost impossible to survive since with Neda’s case any foreigner who attempted to investigate the story was facing the harsh wrath of the government. I also got to understand that Neda was shot to try and scare the protestors which did not work out and instead it acted as the way to show all the evil roots of the government.
As an American, it matters a lot to me because these cases can happen to my country too because the case of Neda was a global issue. There are many Iranians in America who some came to study, and others came to work and them being part of the country makes the death concern to me(ThisIsForNeda, 2010). To the citizens, the story of the death of Neda Agha-Soltanwas fundamental because for the first time the world got to understand what crisis Iran was going through including the then president of America Barrack Obama. The main reason as to why the citizens of Iran were protesting was because of the disputed election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad which they strongly disagreed that was free, fair and open.
Conclusions
On the other side of the story, the Iranian government gave a contradictory response to the shooting. One of the responses from the government was that it was notBasij, a paramilitary organization who were responsible for the shooting. Instead, they said that Neda was shot by the protestors during the protests. Later some people confessed that the government tried to force some citizens to confess that it was not the government who shot Neda. Things were never the same again, and Neda indeed left a legacy that will live forever where she is now viewed as a face which brought some sanity a liberation to the citizens of Iran. Today in the Queen’s college there is the presence of Neda Agha-Soltan Graduate Scholarship which gives scholarships to students mostly with the Iranian heritage.
