Death Awareness Movement

Death awareness movement refers to a network of individuals, groups, and organizations that focus on issues of dying, death and loss. Some of the key accomplishments of this movement include the following. First, death awareness movement resulted in the development of hospice. In the last quarter of the 20th century, hospice represented one of the successful grassroots movements. This movement focuses on caring for the dying. Besides, the first modern hospice, St. Christopher’s was opened in 1967 outside of London (Bryant & Peck, 2009). St. Christopher Hospice provided a platform for research and training. In 1974, the widespread of the hospice movement in the US led to the development of Hospice, Inc. in Bradford, Connecticut (Bryant & Peck, 2009). Second, the death awareness movement resulted in many changes that included providing after-care services. It became a routine for funeral homes to offer information, referrals, sponsorships and educational seminars (Bryant & Peck, 2009).

Professionals who have played a role in shaping this movement include the following. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, International Work Group on Dying, Death, and Bereavement and the Association for Death Education and Counseling have played a significant role in accomplishing the goal of this movement (Bryant & Peck, 2009). Moreover, many of these organizations focus on end-of-life issues. For instance, the specialized task force of the American Psychology Association is end-of-life issues. I believe that the roles played by these professionals are legitimate in the society. For instance, the groups involved in the movement hosted seminars, symposium, workshops, and training, which are useful in providing inspirations to audiences ranging from children to adults. Also, the plethora of literature offered increases public awareness of death.
