Day at the Texas Capitol

Day at the Texas Capitol

Last year in Austin, there was an ordinance that was passed that required the city’s employers to offer their workers paid sick leaves. The law required that each employer should give an up to 64 hours paid leave to employees in a year and up to 48 hours for small businesses. This law generated a lot of discussions, and business owners protested the bill leading to a reaction from the governor that the local bill will be reviewed. As students of St. Edwards University studying legislative processes and the influence that groups have on it, we came into the city of Texas to follow up on this bill and learn the actions that have been taken on it.

We came into the city to understand the role that business people have in the bill and the measures that the legislators have put in place to ensure that both the interest of employers and workers have been protected. In the capital, we hope that we would be able to attend at least one session in parliament. We would also like to talk to some legislators to have more insight into the bill. Led by our lecturer, we hope that we will be able to accomplish all these despite not having any member from the legislature to show us around.

After the visit, I summarized all the experiences in a report that will be made available in the university when needed. For each of the legislative office that we attended, we went bearing gifts as a way for offering our gratitude for the time that the legislators gave us. Our visit was successful as we managed to meet all the legislators that we intended to meet even without having secured an appointment prior.
